Save yourself the considerable effort of that and buy a nanocom.
Whack it in instrument mode and it will tell you a while bunch of information while you drive along![]()

On the D2 you can press the EXT button on the climate control to see the external temp.
My half cocked idea if it would work, is to use that set up but buy a new sensor that uses the same parameters and install it to tell me the coolant temp instead.
id like to know sometimes what my engine temp is really doing, e.g. after driving up a huge hill driving it hard to maintain 110km/h, or heavy off road.
or will this freak out the climate control?
or is it a crappy idea?;

Does the nanocom disable the dash when in instrument mode?

No. It has no impact on the dash instrumentation.

The ambient sensor starts the aux electric cooling fan @ 28c under 80kph![]()
Seeing an LED display with dry sensor is only about $25 on ebay , IMHO it is better to go that way.
I find the Ext temp display quite useful.

What about an OBD2 Bluetooth or Wifi scanner and the appropriate app on your smart phone.
A poofteenth the price of a nanocom. And I believe (from my recent research) that some apps can reset fault codes.
I could be wrong, but will be looking deeper into this area soon.

nothing works better than a nanocom
a scangauge does 50% of a nanocom and probably what you want.
Current Cars:
2013 E3 Maloo, 350kw
2008 RRS, TDV8
1995 VS Clubsport
Previous Cars:
2008 ML63, V8
2002 VY SS Ute, 300kw
2002 Disco 2, LS1 conversion
Scangauge will work on a V8.
I think there's maybe 1-2 apps that I personally know of that will interact with a Td5, and for what you will spend on getting them and the hardware required for them, you might as well just buy a nanocom
