Also, since the main loom needs to be replaced, will a pre face lift loom and ecu do the job, as in a 2000-2002 loom?
Hi guys,
I have been on the market to buy a v8 automatic d2 for nearly 5 months. I have found the perfect example, the only thing that is wrong with it is that it is manual, i much prefer an auto for beter offroad control.
I understand it is no easy feet, but i want to know the feasibility of converting it automatic. I know that many will reply with "just wait for the right one, it will come around". But please refrain, i just want to talk about a possible conversion.
I have read this thread: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...onversion.html
so i know what needs to be done. But i want to know if there is any way that the conversion could go seriously wrong? if i replace the main ECU with an automatic compatible unit, is it possible that it wont talk to the rest of the car and or dash cluster and brick the car?
I am handy with tools and i believe that i am capable of the conversion, but i just dont want to buy a car that may be turned into a door stop if the conversion hits a unexpected issue.
many thanks in advance.

Would it be easier to do a standalone auto?
Possibly a Disco1 auto, or with a compushift and a D2 auto setup like how Ashcroft do the Defender automatic conversions..

The auto will set you back anywhere from 1-3K depending on condition plus the other parts required, much easier to just get an auto vehicle.
There is a good low K one in the markets here in Vic.

Thanks for the reply mate, but i have not found a vehicle this good in the months i have been searching, it is fully kitted, super low kays, priced right and an awesome colour combo. I can put up with the r380 until i gather every part for the conversion. I have a few trips coming up that my mates are planning, i really don't want to be without wheels for these trips.
It is a compromise buying a second hand vehicle, if i want it to be exactly what i want, i will have to work towards that goal. a conversion would just be part of that process.
Are there two looms?
there cant be that many wires,, even the temp sensor is elsewhere!

Yes there is two looms unfotunately, i have thought about identifying how the looms are different, then just splicing the new auto wires into the ecu plug pins.. that and a new ecu. although this seams like a good plan, i think it may be a risky way of doing it. i will have to do study a wiring diagram.
