    Couple of CDL questions

    Hi There,
    First question, just fitted a CDL transfer case. On the front housing there are two switches, what do they indicate? On the rear housing there is one switch, what does that one indicate?

    Second question, in which direction of rotation of the spindle does the CDL engage? Looking from above turning the spindle clockwise the two out put flanges lock up, I am assuming this is a locked diff. Turning anticlockwise both flanges turn independantly, assuming unlocked.

    There appears to be a position in the middle, like a neutral position, I am going to assume the CDL spindle is supposed to be all the way in one direction or the other and no middle position.

    With the gearbox in gear I would have expected with the CDL engaged and disengaged the output flanges would locked up. The flanges only lock up when the CDL is engaged, is that correct?

    I sort of answer my own questions here however I'm just not sure if the output flanges should turn independantly with the gearbox in a gear and the CDL in what appears to be a disengaged position.

    Your assumptions are on the money Marty, engaged is clockwise looking from above, when cdl is engaged it shouldn't turn in gear but disengaged, the differential action is allowing you to turn the flange with the least resistance.
    Front switch is cdl , rear is high/ low.

    There is no middle position.
    The selector is pushed along a shaft with the help of a spring which holds the fork against the dog clutch inside until the dogs line up and it clunks into mesh.
    The "middle position" may be just before the slope engages on the shaft which lifts the switch.

    Hi Mary, the front switch is the switch for the dash diff lock warning light, the other front switch is the neutral sensing? the rear is the Temperture sender.

    The switch configuration will vary depending what year/model the TC came out of: At the front just behind the CDL actuator on a horizontal surface will be one (1999-2001) or two (2003-2004) CDL indicator switches. On the vertical face of the front output housing will be the Hi-Lo switch. ( not fitted on Disco 1) Towards the rear on the left hand side there may be a temperature sensor (usually only on V8s) if not fitted there will be a blanking plug. On the top right hand side there may be a TC neutral indicator switch - not normally fitted to Aust spec vehicles but may be fitted on 2003-2004 models. Additionally on a Disco 1 rear output housing you will find the speed sensor connection not fitted on a Disco 2.

    D2 LT230 switches on the front housing

    This is a disco 2 TC and had two diff lock switches. I removed one to match the defender configuration. it was a bugger to fit and tighten anyhow You can see the plug in place beside the switch. The one remaining works on the selector fork, and works smoother than the other one which works on a detent groove on the selector shaft. Not sure why there's two of them.
    the hi lo range indicator switch is up high on the opposite side it works off the end of the selector shaft.
    if you can turn the output shafts independently of each other the CD is disengaged. cheers simmo.

    bracket LT230

    Hi jazzman, the bracket is pretty easy to make if you have a welder and a drill press.

    The jack is from SCA, I drilled and tapped the "cup" for 3 x M8 bolts, the cup is easily detatched from the jack, only a split pin.

    I short piece of 1" steel pipe cut off at the angle of the sump cover (when the TC is Hi Lo selector is horizontal), the steel plate picks up the bottom 5 bolts on the sump cover ( I only use 4 of them). The forward bottom corner of the sump cover is the CoG or close enough to.
