    Intermittent Loss of Power

    Hi Gang,
Been getting intermittent Power Loss on acceleration every now and then (bloody scary when it happens pulling into traffic with a Semi bearing down on you. Lol) .
Anyway, today it happened while driving along. Got the revs back up to over 2k slowly & then off she went again. Thoughts or ideas?
(MAF has been checked with multimeter but have ordered a new one to test it's not failing. Anything else to check? Also getting intermittent considerable Black smoke upon acceleration. Guys at work joke I'm driving a 007 car dropping smoke bomb & disappearing before the car behind me makes its way out of the smoke.)

Td5? If so then if unplugging the MAF results in an improvement, then its the MAF. Turbo hoses are another thing to check. They delaminate when they get old and giving it a boot full causes the hose to collapse internally blocking the airflow.

    Cheers
    Steve

+1 As above + check for oil in the ECU red plug and if there is any replace the injector loom pronto(use only genuine)

    Angry Still issues

I'm back. Firstly thank you gentlemen for taking the time to assist me. Well I replaced the MAF. Imagine my happiness at no more clouds of black smoke on take off. Unfortunately I'm now experiencing zero boost till I get to about 2k rpm. 😡
Doing my head in as I just can't seem to get her running properly. Wife won't drive it as it goes from one issue to the next.
    SO......
Now that we know it's not the MAF (injector loom & clean ECU plug already done & I have silicone hoses) what should I start looking at next???? Massive turbo lag Will ultimately be dangerous as I'm used to her having a massive amount of get up & go.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

check wastegate and associated linkages and hoses, check turbo impeller , see if someone has a nanocom up that way who can see whats happening on live readings.

Hi, do you still have EGR?, if yes see if the valve is not clogged with muck also see the MAP/IAT sensor(in the inlet manifold) to not be gunked, for this low boost issue you really need a tester to see some live data cos it can be the AAP sensor too(in the airbox), the air and fuel filters are OK?

Firstly a big thank you for taking the time.

ERG was already blanked when I bought her.

I will have to get it plugged in (was going to buy one but unsure if I'm going to keep her). I've had her about 3 months. It has had 200k service, New Injector Harness, sump gasket, xyz switch, abs module, new battery, MAF, MAP cleaned, etc (it's 0149 & I can't remember what else I've done).

I truly love her but she is breaking my heart. It's like each time I get on top of something it leads to something else. Really thought a new MAF would finally see me driving with a Disco 2 smile on my dial.

I've tested the MAF & it's working. When I unplug it I get my power back but also the black Smoke cloud eminating from the tail under load and takeoff.

Sorry for the vent. The rig is just getting the better of me at the moment.

    boost modulator

Ok. I'm ready to get on with it after my little cry. Am now think it could be boost modulator. From the symptoms I've previously posted would anyone agree it could be this part?
Are there any issues doing the Defender bypassing it for a full week while I wait for the part to come in?

Again thank you for everyone's help & time. Once I can get her running properly I'll be a more positive member of AULRO, positing pics & adventures but for now I've got to get her to the point I can drive her without crying. Lol

Did you check the intercooler hoses to see that one hasn't collapsed inside?

If my thought process is correct, the only effect of a faulty boost modulator would be for it to be open ie like a Defender. If closed then you would have lots of boost. Did you check the hoses to and from it?
The only time I have had black smoke is when an intercooler hose popped off and the ECU was supplying lots of fuel with no boost. So my first thought is that you have low boost or the MAP is not telling the ECU the level of boost.
I think you have to link it to a Nanocom to see what errors come up.

    Regards Philip A
I just googled Discovery 2 Black smoke and by far the most issues were with intercooler hoses collapsing internally , so IMHO this would be the first thing to check.
