    Surging DTI5

Today while going up a hill Disco felt like it was running out of power on flat it was ok , next time i drove it stopped at lights, taking off it surged a couple of times then ok but down on power on hills, got home checked for water in fuel filter nothing, sitting with no load on ,full revs no hesitation, first gear no trouble second gear a little surge, 3,4,5th gear 2800rpm lots of surging but none below 2800rpm, does not seem to be any water leaving header tank, any ideas
only thing i have done in the last couple of days with her is put in 40lt of fuel yesterday, fuel filter was changed 12thk ago

I don't know if you're being dramatic when you say 'lots of surging'.

But I'd be looking to fuel pump.

Td5 has only one in-tank 2 stage(LP + HP) fuel pump which feeds the electronic unit injectors(pumps)

Was chatting to some one down in Hobart and he told me to check fuel filter and mass air flow meter and turbo hoses ,before thinking about fuel pump, so have changed filter and that has helped , but still down on power ,so reading about MAF meter it says lack of power and high fuel use ,both of which i have ,so what fuse is used for MAF , and if that is OK, is it OK to clean MAF with electrical cleaner or must I use MAF cleaner

Unplug the MAF and drive it so...if you'll feel noticeable improvement a cleaning doesnt help IMO, you'll need a new Siemens/VDO unit, for cleaning the dedicated cleaner is the best but the electric one doesnt hurt, check fuse F2 engine bay to rule it out

Still working on disco to get full power, trying to stay away from fuel pump if i can
but looks like i might have to bite the bullet and replace it
one thing i have tried is to disconnect the MAF sensor and drive , nothing seems to happen, some people say ,disconnected should see a lot of smoke out of exhaust, nothing no more drop off on power than what is occurring with MAF plugged up,
if i take disco to mechanic will thy be able to tell with a diagnostic test if thy can connect into the system , also replaced the turbo hoses, now that's a story about price differences

I expect that the boost regulator has failed, the waste-gate has frozen or the waste-gate actuator has failed which allows excessive boost which will trigger fuel cut-out by the ecm. Ensure that the waste-gate can be moved, verify that the waste-gate actuator responds to air pressure or at least obviously doesn't leak pressure (suck on the tube) then connect the pressure tube from the turbo outlet pipe directly to the waste-gate actuator which will limit boost to the waste-gate mechanical setting to prevent fuel cut-out, albeit with less power. If the problem is now overcome then buy a new boost regulator.
