    I can sympathise Bob.
My D2 currently has the head off, rad and IC out, etc etc.
Started as a head gasket swap, now all the 'while I'm here' jobs.
After that, I get to rebuild the auto and the transfer case, as well as redo the suspension.
    And all the other stuff.
I was in two minds about whether or not to keep playing or start saving for something else.
Keep the mighty D2 living Bob, they're the best of both worlds

Thank you, Muppet, I will fight on.I am going to aim for 500,000kms. I'm dreaming , I know, and am fully aware the D2 is old and tired. But, I have maintained and serviced it well, I believe. There will be no more really rough tracks, just moderate sand work, the Gibb road may be swapped for a more sedate tour of Tasmania, the vehicle and I are at a stage where moderation will ensure longevity.

Good Bob 10, I'm at 561,000 and still going like new and does not need oil between changes. I did fit an AMC head some time ago but the bottom end is original. I'm sure that there are some with higher K's still going well.

Thanks, Pippin. That gives me confidence. I am pedantic about overheating the head, have an engine saver temp. sensor fitted, when on sand I watch it closely. I believe the twin filter oil system just is the best you can get. I use synthetic oil, and service regularly. And I drive like a granny. No give it the berries, or force my way through. Strangely enough, I get where I want to go, every time, so far. AND , loving it.

Sorry Bob10 I must fess up to my mistake, I am now at 463,000 I put a 5 instead of a 4. However I am confident of breaking the 1/2 million as I drive the same as you.

That's still an impressive mileage. I've been studying RAVE, and have almost gathered the courage to drop the gearbox myself. Not something I would normally attempt, in my driveway. But, I have willing helpers, and all the time in the World. Something to keep the brain cells active.
