Gary you are a gentleman. Thanks for your help. I am a bit uncomfortable with 100p I have to say...and I'm thinking that perhaps 75-80p might be insufficient for steel as a single torque proposition...maybe I will go with composite after all! Will ponder.

I have had two sets of (composite)gasket failures at 70lbs(first bolts then studs), at some stage Garry you just have to bite the bullet.;):D
There must have been a reason ARP increased the rating,:angel:

Gary did you have my kit or the older one for Buick? I know the older one didn't use all the block threads and the new one does....I dry ran a stud in last night and it bottomed out by hand with the top thread of the studs being about 1mm below the deck...more threads less likely to strip.
Also what do you guys reckon about a very thin smear of GM Head Stud Sealer on the coarse end only....ie not enough to cause hydraulic lock? I am also planning not to invest in a head chaser but rather to use a $10 tap using CRC then cleaning the holes and deck with brake cleaner. Cheers

I think it might depend on gasket material too. Unless the surfaces are perfect I just can't see 60lb in that article clamping an MLS enough to seal...Cheers

grease on the tap(finishing, not starting!) will trap most of the crud,
if that trial fitting went fine, I might test another,, but they all should be similar in amounts of crud, it is only the threads at the bottom where the bolts didnt reach that are of concern?
is there also a concern with sealing the stud?

Battler I have done a LOT of research and spoken to a number of engine rebuilders and my family who are mechanics and have rebuilt a variety of engines and overwhelmingly studs are worth the money. Especially when the stretch bolts were torqued up in factory by a machine all at once...
So apart from the coolant leaking down front and rear of motor on the passenger bank it looks like there was blowby in number 5 too...so failure there? This was the composite gasket fitted less than 20 000k ago with stretch bolts. I know one thing the stretch bolts came out way easier than the Rover installed side....Rover tightened those suckers up 55000 k ago very tight on the line. Might give a clue to why stretch bolts to recommended torque and then their half turn or whatever isn't great....
