Hi, run a stall test on it before you spend big money:
Hi team
I have tried a search but lots of spurious items coming up
I'm pretty sure the auto needs replacing
It does that funny , not always engaging forward or reverse intermittently but it has never failed to do so after running through 1st to park or giving a few revs
It may have also started doing a driveline vibration very occasionally
actually feels like front end but not sure
Not consistant with the vibration thing
Anyways , I think I might bite the bullett and do the auto
Would the repair include the torque converter
Any idea of what it will cost
I think I had a price of $6500 for the whole job from A and B
They serviced it back it Feb 2016 and said it had no major issues with clutch packs etc but did experience the non engaging issue
I might have to go to Manuel auto in Thomstown , just from a drop off and pick up perspective

Hi, run a stall test on it before you spend big money:
Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
How many kms on it? has it done heavy towing? colour of trans oil still a healthy colour or very dark?
Reason for not always selecting gear or changing up easily is the valve spools get very hard to move in their bores, when I did my trans (overhauled it myself and made some internal changes) just over a year ago the spools were very hard to get out once cleaned spools were easy to move in the bores.
disco seriesII mods so far:-bullbar,hyd winch,
detriot locker, lsd front,C.D.L kit, chipped and bigger intercooler,2" lift, rock sliders, lsd in transfer case, modified auto trans.

Thanks team
1. Sierra
Stall test proved this out
Started out low for 3 seconds (1400 rpm) but when I think I heard the turbo come on , it sat at 2750 rpm consistent

268,000kms
Unknown history prior to my ownership in Jan 2016
I havent done any heavy towing since buying it
Haven't checked the trans oil condition
Do I do that through the filler/level plug with a bit of string or just top it up if necessary and see what comes out?
Can the valve spools be serviced if the auto is still in the car ?
since you have just bought it, maybe a good idea to give it a service change all filters and check oil levels in transfer case as these are prone to leak and only hold a small amount of oil.
order a trans filter and trans sump gasket drop the oil and remove trans sump, remove filter and replace, pull apart old filter and also check bottom of sump for debris etc.
it will give you an idea and does not hurt to do the oils in all compartments then you know when things are done.

I bought it in Jan 2016
All the fluids were done then
Engine , trans, diffs , radiator
About 2 months later , I had A and B autos give the trans a service and test including filters etc
They reported that the clutch packs and the whole auto was in great shape
They felt it had been rebuilt
The only issue to date ( other than the latest vibration , which may not be auto at all) is the intermittent valve spool thing
That has always been overcome by applying the brake and adding a few revs to get them to seat or lift as the case may be
the valve bank can be pulled out without removing trans, a bit of a pain to do and you have to watch which bolts you remove, I have the info somewhere will see if I can dig it up on weekend (work long hours ).
still would look at pulling filter out and pull it apart see if it is full of clutch material, if oil and filter clean maybe look at pulling valve block out and stripping it may not have been done when(if) trans was reconditioned, a much cheaper option. check out the BMW sites they have the same trans also google 22hp4e valve block or different combos of that.

Will do all of that

Pete
A and B quoted me $200 for a diagnostic assessment.
Might be worth doing.
Its also my understanding, and my experience in two cases supports this, that the ZF gearbox lasts about 250k plus or minus before it fails.
Bob
Thanks Bob
The car is currently down at Rova Range and the team are doing a service and engine mounts and some brake rotors and stuff
They haven't had a chance to road test above 90 kmh yet but they will do soon
They commented that for all intents and purposes , the auto changes up and down as it should and up to 70kmh it performs exactly as required
No clunks, no slipping . Smooth as a bubbies bum
A and B did a test back in Feb(?) 2016 and found no yucky fluids or bits of transmission or stuff or any problems ( other than spools)
Hopefully , it was some sort of frequency / vibration issue with the engine mounts
If not , I will get Manuel Autos in Thomastown to check it out. I live not far from there
They gave me a good price on worst case scenario
Geez, the car will be just about perfect when I go to trade or sell before June this year
