    Viscous Fan Hurricane TD5

Can someone please confirm when driving slowly and the viscous fan engages on the TD5 you can hear a hurricane from under the bonnet?

I've been in the Vic High country all weekend and I had to pull out half way up Conways due to engine temps of 110 degrees C and only getting worse. Heater on flat out an ambient temp of about 30C started to cool it down when parked.

That night I connected the electric thermo fan to the front fog light, hence the fan would turn on when I turned the fog lights on. Real easy to do by the way, just need to remember to turn the fan manually on when the A/C is on, and get the polarity right.

This got me up Basalt Knob and to the trig point on Blue Rag Range without too many instance over 100 degrees C.

Everything else in my cooling system is brand new, everything. I replaced it all when the radiator return hose fitting broke. Thermostat, reservoir bottle, radiator, hoses, water pump and pulley drive belt. All good quality stuff.

I can feel some resistance in the fan when i turn the fan, but i suspect it is faulty. I can do the other tests too, but if someone can confirm the TD5 makes more or less the same sound the 3.5lt V8 Range Rover classic engine makes when it engages that would be enough for me to spend the money on a new one.

you will definately hear it ,you can also pop the bonnet when hot and feel the airflow when working correctly, especially if someone picks the revs up for you

Thanks mate, I'm pretty confident it is buggered just needed to get some reassurance as I've made mistakes before just like everyone else

To test the operation of the viscous fan requires you acquire a special tool in the form of a rolled up newspaper!

When the temps are up to where you'd expect the fan clutch to be engaged use the newspaper to try and stop the fan rotation and if you can stop the rotation the viscous clutch is u/s and you need a new fan assembly.

Tested the fan today with a squished small cardboard box as it was all I had. There is not much left of the box, so i'm guessing the fan is OK. Doesn't make the same sound as the V8 fan did, but it is working.

So why now is the cooling system getting so warm? Nanocom readings.

What is the go with water pumps and the impeller gaps I've heard whispers about? Pretty sure mine is Airtex brand.

Also does anyone know if the aircon thermo fan switches on when the coolant temp gets warm or only with the A/C?

Could be a fault with the radiator? blocked, bent fins etc.

pretty sure an electric fan kicks it at 110 but by then its too late.

Thanks Jason. The radiator is mint. I agree 110 degrees C is too high.

Re viscous might be ok when idling etc but when under extreme load the fluid mat not be circulating correctly, do you hear a roar when under actual heavy load?
