Disco 2 Brake pedal pump / Bleeding

Hi All, I have jut got my self a Disco 2 2000 with TD5
the issue I have that has me reaching out to someone to help with is that the brake pedal moves(fairly long, well 2 inches) and then goes hard and the brakes bite well.
All pads are good, no visible leaks etc etc, if driving along I apply the brake pedal and then take foot off and then apply the brakes again (pump once) the brake pedal comes up hard and moves half the distance and bites even better.

I have tried a traditional bleed with an assistance pumping the pedal and bleeding the furthest calliper to the closest to the master. (no change)

searching the internet has pointed me to air being trapped in the ABS modulator, but I need a $1000 link tool to activate the valve circuits etc.

I then rang a number of brake and landrover experts and they said that's the way it is and they never do anything different to what I have done.

now I don't believe that it is 'Normal'

can I carry out a gravity bleed or activate the ABS modulator and get the air out.

hope to get a firm pedal.

BTW the hand brake warning lamp on the dash is always on and the fluid switch is confirmed to be ok and the hand brake switch works too.

no 3 amigos with me just the warning lamp (which is on a separate circuit)

Help me understand more than the Adelaide experts.

I like you would like to improve my pedal too - i've strived to achieve that over 7 years of ownership. There had been a lot of useful discussion on the forum over that time re brake bleeding. The abs unit can be purged of air by a drive procedure using Traction Control to 'work' the valves and then re-bleeding the brakes. I've adapted a garden sprayer to function as a pressure bleeder and will use that next time around meanwhile I'm working out how i will pressure seal the fill neck of the brake fluid reservoir..

RAVE has the bleed sequence from the shortest, Passenger side to the furthest, Drivers side rear.

I've done modulator power bleeds with nanacom and it did improve brake feel so some of my customers tell me.

    Try this: http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...akes-solo.html

It doesn't fully flush all the ABS module channels but should help.
    Cheers

You should change the master cylinder if you know it's old

and yes the D2 brakes have a longer travel than say, a D1
but they are built this way for a reason.
By all means re-bleed and modulate as required but dont get in the habit of double pumping,, you may not have the extra distance when you really need it---

Yup a modulator power bleed is the professional (and recommended) way and although "traditional" methods plus the 'tricks' posted on the forum to deal with the ABS modulator do deliver a servicable result it just ain't quite the same as the workshop modulator power bleed...

The low pedal on first push and then higher on the second push seems to be the "normal" experience for many disco 2 owners, somebody dubbed it "the chauffuer pedal" years ago I dont know! but it is an irritant for me too...

Got tied of waiting for Hawkeye or Nanocom preloved units to come available so someday when I accrue a 'lazy' $700 thereabouts I'll be buying new I guess so as to do the job correctly.

I have bled mine to death in every conceivable way, replaced the master cylinder, rotors, seals and switches in the ABS unit, and it is still the worst brake pedal I have ever known.

I had a Kawasaki ZX10R with a similar feel in the front brakes. Some owners swapped out the master cylinder and caliper for a Honda job. It's just the way it was......

I've done the method described as above
    http://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery-...akes-solo.html
    and it worked fine,,

actually reading Offtracks explanation of the brake system, means the above method is a simple way of doing ALL YOU NEED to do.

sure if you have a nanocom, why not, but it gives no better outcome.
