    Headliner Replacement

Currently fixing both leaking sunroof and thought whilst the headlining is out i should recover it. What type of Headliner material is it and where do you get it from. Mine is the light tan color (2003).

Have you thought of going for a different colour and material?

When I did mine I went with a black for some contrast and for something different as well.

However looking back, that plastic type vinyl found in Toyotas would have been perfect for ease of cleaning.

I don't know exactly what it called but I didn't have much choice.

The headliner for the D2 is apparently really wide which is a stocking issue so in black they only had this soft carpet like stuff.

It starts off really fluffy but as the weeks went on the fluffy came off and feels much better.

Hopefully the pictures below help. I took them just now so it's a little dark outside but it's the rear driver side seat that I'm in.

    This is the fluffy stuff

Hi MK1, I started pulling my lining out yesterday could you tell me if the A pillar trim needs to come off and how you did it, i've seen a video on how the B pillar comes off but can't find anything on the A., the rest of trim seems straight forward.
Is it in the Rave Cd i received mine this week but i'm still struggling to navigate through it at the moment.

    Thanks

Do a search Headlining has been cover many times before, . A good motor trimmer would be able to supply you the correct type of headlining material.
the fluffy stuff in Black is a polypropylene material, Clark rubber or a boating place or a motor trimmer might be a good source.

Yes the A pillars need to come off. I found the D2 came off fairly easily they pretty much pop out and have metal clips, be firm but take care as it is easy to break the a pillar trim. I started at the top using panel tools to pry out a bit at a time and worked my way down.

Did my sons a few months ago, came out quite well for a couple of amateurs.
    We used Charcoal felt headlining.
The black was going to be a little dark I felt, no pun intended.
The main issue we came across was felt is easily available in ample width.
Most other fabric including vinyl etc would be a very tight fit for width in a D1/2 and would likely involve in having to do in two sections which would require a seem or some sort of joiner. Apparently can be done.
I think I posted something on here a while back.
Not a hard job just time consuming, a little messy with contact adhesive and you need to be quick with the fitting once you start.
There are a few tutorials around.
Most motor upholstery suppliers will be able to advise. Look for a supplier of material rather than a upholsterer if you are going to do yourself. We got ours from a supplier in Welshpool.
