    TD5 Engine intermitent "missing"

I have a 2003 D2a manual. It has a re-ocurring intermitent "miss". I know diesel engines don't miss but that's what it feels like.

Last year the car became almost undriveable in normal mode ie not in cruise control, the motor would continually 'miss" & occassionally the engine light would come on on the dash. In cruise control the engine would run perfectly. A check with my Nanocom showed "21.6 problem with driver demand"

After we got home i had to have it towed to my mechanic, a landrover specialist, he reset the computer & it ran OK. To test it he replaced the ECU & & the engine continued to run faultlessly so he swapped the original ECU back in & the car ran perfectly for 5 months.

Then we went on another trip about 2 weeks ago & the problem started up again, occassionally at first & slowly growing worse. To get around the problem I would disconnect the ECU & this would solve the problem for a day or two.

The ECU is performance chipped by Britpart, & I am towing a Tvan camper trailer, I am starting to suspect the throttle sender but would appreciate any other thoughts on the subject.

    Thanks for any responses
    Greg

Obvious things first, since 'resetting the ecu' seems to help, is that there is oil in the injector loom, unplugging and leaving could clean the oil out for a bit again. This is covered everywhere and is pretty much a maintenance item, interesting you didn't mention it.

The next thing is the missing, if you are towing the camper trailer, then it may be that you are getting the boost up to the cut off limit. Might be worth piping the pressure pipe from turbo outlet directly to waste gate actuator to test if the modulator has an issue.
After that you may get away with some adjustment of the waste gate rod, or try fitting a boost box. You really want to know what pressure it is getting though, overboosting beyond what is safe is something you want to stop, not avoid the ECU noticing.

    TD5 Engine intermitent "missing"

Driver demand fault and no probs on cruise control points to the TPS (throttle position sensor)

I don't follow the "specialists" logic if they had the information posted.

I'll simplify the whole thing: IMO the best move would be to replace the throttle pedal first(which contains the sensor) and after this one is ruled out and the symptom persists then go further

Thanks Steve_a, Strangy & Sierrafery for your replies,
Steve, it isn't oil in the harness, i had it replaced last year & I looked at that possibility first up, no oil. I will follow up on the overboost possibility, though I still suspect the throttle control.
I have in the back of my mind that there are 2 models of throttle assy. Is this correct & if so how do I tell which one I need?
Have to say AULRO is a great resource, thank you all again.
    Cheers

Occurs when you have the boot into it ( taking off , up a hill etc) , I recently had some overboost issues that result in an ECU fuel cut. I had blown off a waste gate actuator line. Check clean the actuator air solenoid and free up wastegate. I also feel my old 3" 1 muffler exhaust was causing turbo overspeed once I fixed the manifold leak.

Sounds like its hitting overboost. Maybe wind back the actuator rod a turn and see how you go. Mine hit overboost in cooler weather after I set it up in summer. Denser air and all that. Set it up for winter (ie turn the actuator adjuster nut thingy until it just doesn't hit overboost in cold weather) and you'll be right all year round. It worked for me. And get a proper tune. Britpart isn't called **** part for no reason 😉
