A great buy. A definite bargain. What are these new? About $1600 bare! As for the technical questions, wouldn't have a clue.
I hope I can get that lucky when need a new head.
My old 6/2002 D2 with just over 300,000k's started filling the sump with diesel, new O-rings and washers didn't work, so it's a cracked injection port in the head.Given the age etc of the D2 it was going to sell it whole or scrap for parts. I only use it now for local work. I had no takers for the complete car at a reasonable price, and SWMBO said no car is going to be wrecked here. I started looking for a head, not cheap! then I ended up with a head for $700 off E-bay. when I went to Sydney to pick it up it was fully setup with reco injectors, new glow plugs and injector cable; and to top it off it was a AMC Head, and he threw in a new dash mat, some gaskets and a intake manifold
The story was he had replaced the head , but had only gone just over 400k's from home and did a big end
, so he replaced it with a complete second hand engine.
The photo's attached are the head as picked up, no work done to it; I'm thinking the head won't need a skim ?
My D2 has a 2 hole gasket at present, should I keep to this or get a 3 hole gasket as most just use this one now ?
What would you do ?

						Use another 2 hole gasket.
I'm curious why no 1 is clean compared to others.
I'd check flat and true before fitting.
...but probably should have been done prior to purchase
The gasket should be the same as it was before, it's selection becomes an issue only if the crankshaft, pistons or connecting bores were replaced

I agree with Strangy No 1 has had a wash with coolant or diesel, if you do not want to send it to the shop check it yourself with a straight edge and feeler gauges.
 AT REST

AT RESTI second that, you don't know the circumstances that the previous owner had when he removed it, did they follow the sequence of unbolting the bolts, etc, best to be safe and give your self peace of mind by checking its trueness before refitting just in remote case in case you waste time and have to remove it again.

Sorry but have to add something else.
It could be simply the seller cleaned up #1.
The pics look very similar to one of mine which cracked between the #1 inlet runner and coolant gallery.
I was getting a near lock on start after a shutdown.
It left #1 quite clean.
If this is true in the pics then coolant entering the cylinder on subsequent starts could have caused the conrod damage with subsequent failure as described.
Not meaning to be negative, just passing on my concerns for evaluation.
Thanks for the replies, we checked the head and appears to be true. As for No 1 port I honestly don't know if he cleaned it or not ! I was only considering the skim to remove the residual gasket material. I haven't heard of any AMD heads leaking fuel or coolant so hopefully it won't be a problem. Like any second hand part it can be a gamble, but in this case for the price I think it worth the risk.
