    Tyre Advice 245 or 265/70 265/75?

Sorry if this topic has been done to death already.

The tyres on my TD5 D2 (auto) are dated 2004, so I need new tyres in next couple of days. The local tyre expert recommends Falken Wildpeak AT1 or AT3. I've got a couple of questions-

    1) How are they as an AT tyre? Older AT1 or newer AT3?

Currently I've got BFG KO LT245/70/16's. I've been thinking of going to 265's. I've been told 265/75/16 will fit (I've got OME coils & shocks), but am I better of going 265/70/16? I can get the AT1 for just about $190 for either 265/70 or 245/70, whereas the 265/75 is around $250

    2) what can I expect from fuel economy, ride & performance? Currently getting 13L/100km. What r others achieving?

I had a new set of Yokohama's fitted a year or so ago and was told by Beurepairs at the time that 245/70/16 was the biggest tyre I could fit without fitting a lift kit.
They could be wrong But I haven't had any problems using the 245 tyres in sand or rock so far, Although I am certain that the 265 tyres would do a better job though.

I have run most configurations up to 265 and IMHO 245/75/16 is the way to go. Cheers

    I agree.

I am running with Falken Wildpeak AT02 245/70R16. They have been an awesome tyre. I am just a tad under 2 years old with mine and 65,000km. They still have plenty of tread left. I have run them through clay, rock, gravel and water at around 20-22psi and they have been excellent. No punctures and no chipping.

On road, they are as quiet as any AT is going to get. I drive 80km of freeway daily there is no audible whine. They grip well in the dry and wet.

I choose not to rotate mine (I have a theory). Wear has been even. No scrubbing. Stock suspension geometry and for the most part, they have been run with stuffed original factory shocks (just replaced with Bilsteins).

    I got 12.5l/100km while towing a 1.3t camper over 600km os measurement.

    And they look great.

I hope that helps. I have no problem in recommending the Wildpeaks.

I have 265/70 and get around 11L/100 and 14L/100 towing a Kimberley kamper. This size is about 6% bigger than std. 255/70 is about 4% oversize. 245/75 and 265/70 are approx' the same diameter. Any bigger and you start putting your gearing out too much ... especially when towing.

I think it was the guys from LR Automotive told me that 265/75/16 will fit with no alterations if u have a bullbar.

Thanks for the reply & pics. I guess the bigger the tyre the greater any issues get amplified also. I wonder if 245/70/16 is as big as a 'couple times a year' off roader needs to go. True, 265/75/16 will give me 1" extra lift, but maybe I could just pick an alternative path?!

I like the sidewalk height of 245/75 and a wheel that isn't too side (still 10mm wider than standard) and the fact that virtually all brands can be had in that size in Light Truck carcass.

    Cheers
