Unless yours does a Conrod bearing like mine. You can panic then.

I'm first to admit I have been a dinosaur about electronics. I have been trained in military vehicles and owned all manner of landys from series up to a 1998 300 tdi. I recently purchased a 2000 td5 disco and started the challenge of self taught diagnostics. First piece of advice: Read read and read some more. There are so many sites including AULRO which have invaluable information.
Two if you can afford one, or no some with one use a NANOCOM. Good piece of kit and relatively cheap and i believe have a good resale value. Then get started.
3 follow advice on simple fixes first, before you start buying. Example MAF had a dodgy reading. Investigation showed chaffed wires could be an issue. stripped back cover and located 2 chaffed wires 6 inches apart. fixed and readings in spec.
Hard start ( wound over for ages before starting after purging 3 times ) Injector seals suspected due to soot in fuel tank and once again internet search. Internet search on how to do it, watch you tube. 2 hours later after getting kit . Starts and run like a new one. so much better.
Don't panic give it a try. Baz
yep. thats a panic situation.
thats rare though----

As i was unsure of state of Fuel pump i replaced mine as intend to travel a fair bit, In a discovery there's an access panel under the rear carpet. I removed pump and the sides were black and the fuel tank had black inside it as well. It was not diesel fungus. Google, td5 Soot in tank. Happy to help best i can. have a look at this post
Td5 interesting problem solved

Another way is to unscrew the brass bleed valve that is part of the housing that the fuel filter screws into. It has an integrated small gauze filter, that will be black if you're getting soot in the system
