So I know the clutch grabs and pulls up by hand but it can free spin other way as well which I'm unsure if it should
Will hook up today and test or if I finish on time take to auto sparky see if the have a bench tester
Contacts are bit worn but nothing to bad

It's not supposed to spin the other way cos that centrifugal mechanism which pushes out the gear when it starts spinning won't let it.

My understanding of the pinion drives is when the starter is cranking a motor it's Rpm is around 300 when the motor fires it will be doing up to 700 Rpm with no accelerator which will force the pinion backward to the free wheeling side and there will be no increased revs to the starter if the key is held on a fraction longer.
The pinion slides on a spiral bush to help the pinion teeth mesh with the ring gear teeth, they are quite a efficient bit of gear.
I hope that explains it better Mclaren

Personally i would have gone the belt way in my opinion it is far easier than pulling a Td5 starter out
But all that aside good find and easy fix ,
And say to your self 100000 times i must pay attention to the forum

Couldn't get a 36mm spanner so I went the $25 super cheap tension tool and was pretty easy
Just left the belt in place

I pulled the tensioner back and left bar on it zip tied while taking pulley off!
Is it ok to leave like that for few days till I get the bits?
