    The Science - Frantz Filters
The Mann-Hummel centrifuge is a by-pass filter that removes soot down to 1 micron.
It's factory fitted. It's much more compact, efficient and much cleaner disposal than the old style toilet roll by-pass filters.

The TD5 has probably the best oil filtration system ever fitted to a small diesel engine. (although engines such as Toyota's 2H diesel had a centrifuge too. You could pull them apart to clean and literally peel the layer of soot out)
That's why the recommended oil change interval was 20,000km way back when diesel still had 500PPM sulphur levels and engine oils didn't have the levels of detergency/dispersency they do now.

You don't need a toilet roll by-pass filter, the engine already has something better.

Then you would have to start up a different thread on dunny rolls, as different dunny rolls would have different filtering properties , some would get real anal ( pardon the pun ) about the filtering properties.
I know for use there are different qualities of dunny paper, the newspaper harshness ones and the poke your finger through ones.

never knew that the centrifugal filter was so efficient wont be wasting my time on that then although worth asking the question.

I'd take a wild arsed guess and say Quilton would end up being the best !

It's the nicest I've tried on my botty and very strong.

Yep, they are good bits of gear.

Sorry for being a smart arse with the why?

I find it interesting the Toilet roll filter being that good it was moved vehicle to vehicle.

    Put into context...

One of our mine bosses years back was given a shiny new Prado 120. He drove this vehicle like it was stolen.

As he left the business I adopted the vehicle and first task - drive 650km home to have it serviced.

Upon dropping it to the local Toyota Dealership I was met with some "stern looks".

We knew the MB had never serviced it, knew onsite fleet hadn't touched it. And it turned out that Toyota fleet hadn't seen it since it was delivered.

    Total distance travelled - 79,438km

Same oil, same filters, same tyres... Mann vs Mahle Air Filters

That vehicle is still in the fleet and at well over 200,000km

    My point?

Well any engine will likely be "ok" if kept a while with any reasonable filtration and servicing...

According to their FAQ you shouldn't be using toilet paper in the toilet paper filters any more...

Can't I still use any brand or type of TP for my Frantz Oil Cleaner/Filter?
Most toilet rolls are no longer suitable because they are wound too loosely or are embossed resulting in poor filtration. For optimal performance of the Frantz oil cleaner/filter we recommend buying Frantz replacement elements which are specifically manfactured to achieve the best filtration.
What is the filter element made of?
The Frantz Filter element is made from a special grade of cellulose fibre and is densely compacted to provide effective sub-micron filtration.

I had a 30 min chat with one of the Engineering Manager for Mann Hummel about 3 months back. He told me that they study the genuine filters before designing their own. If they can meet the spec or exceed it, then they will release their own filter. If they dont meet the genuine spec, they wont release the product. So every Mann filter SHOULD at least be as good as the genuine. He was German and sounded knowledgable and trustworthy
