    Car ramps

    iam looking at buying a set of car ramps just to make it easier to get under my Disco2 to do the odd job, what size and weight rating do i have to look at for lifting the front up, i see thy come in 1000kg would something like that be ok

    While I'm probably just being paranoid, the ones I've seen for sale recently look bloody terrible but hopefully you've found some decent ones? I used to have a nice home made set but sold them years ago. I find for 4WD, a couple of bits of treated pine sleepers under each wheel - one a bit longer than the other so driving up into them is easy - get the vehicle high enough.

    D2 is about 2000kg tare, 3000kg gvm.
    That's about 750kg per wheel.

    The ramps should be fine (unless made in China, their specs cannot be trusted).

    i can't remember the front axle weight on the D2 but the Defender is 1•3 on the front axle(with bull bar).
    Like Homestar the ramps I've seen don't look strong enough and I also use timber blocks.
    Mine are red gum fence post off cuts, lesson here- don't burn off good bits off timber

    I changed the gearbox on the D1, twice, on two pairs of ramps with no worries. However, both pairs were of Australian make, quite old, but sound.

    Don't ask me about the twice thing.

    Will the budget stretch to a floor jack [ not cheap crap] and 4 stands if you are young its a good investment over your lifetime but you will need a concrete slab or a sheet of 19mm ply to use them.
    I have ramps and jack and stands and only use the ramps for washdowns.
