All terrain tyres . 18 and 16 inch

    Hi team
    I have 255 55 R18 tyres on the HSE
I asked my tyre man about costs for 18 inch all terrains
He said the range was limited
    BFG ATKO2 $400 f and b
    General grabber AT3 $300 ea f and b

In terms of 16 inch , i worked out that the same rolling diameter is 255 65 R16
    Is that right?
The only options he gave me were Yokahama ATS at $ 283 each
    Can you suggest others
I went for the 255 width to keep the full look
He also made an interesting comment about 16 inch steel wheels and how they werent hub mounted and the ride quality would not be as good?

What's tour rim size? Maxxis do tyres cheaper than those. I love them, although the Bighorn, which are a muddy anyway, are noisy.

    Maxxis A/T 980 Bravo Tyres from $209

Maxxis MT-764 Bighorn Tyres from $219

I had Yokohama's before the Maxxis. They were great while they lasted, but like every Yokie I've ever had, they didn't last. Maybe they've changed.

BFG's are great, but I don't know if they are $800 ish better than the Maxxis.

This is the trouble with tyres. Big investment, and only subjective opinions to go on.

All I know for sure is I won't get Coopers again, says me ducking...

    check prices against jax tyres
    255/65R16 Tyres - 255 65 16 Tyres - JAX Tyres

the standerd 16in tyre size was 235-70-16 255 or 265 was a optional tyre but for 16in
he is also off about ride quality going to 16in rims will improve ride quality as they will have more sidewall to help absorb bumps and irregularities, where as the 18in tyres will handle better due to less sidewall
now do you go bush at all or just gravel roads? if so just get highway tyres will be better on fuel and drive nicer
also if you want better fuel economy go for a narrower tyre like the 235

oh btw all the hub in the middle all it does is help line up the wheel to the studs and maybe help if you have a wheel come loose.
what actually keeps the wheel on the hub is the pressure against the hub from the wheel studs and nuts which will center the wheel with the wheel nuts.

On high speed gravel an aggressive AT like a Duratrac makes a world of difference to handling. 16s are more compliant and comfortable. Maxxis or Duras for me (Duras better but dearer....although with more tread).

    Cheers

I opted to keep the 18" wheels and went for General Grabber AT3 in 255 60 18
slightly bigger and tougher in look while not going overboard.
Picked 6 up for $400 on gumtree. They ride better than expected.
being a XL tyre and not a LT they don't weigh all that much more either.

Recently found tiresize.com, an excellent resource that lists tyres by brand, type etc.
