    D2a TD5 - more mods?

I'm at a crossroad - do I keep "improving" the D2 or move on (and likely spend a whole lot more D2a TD5 - more mods? to replace her with something for the job)

My issues are towing related, the 2 tonne van and TC lockup , gearing and maybe a bit more zoom. Solving first 2 however might make me less concerned abt gaining more power.

I have to rebuild the LT230 Tcase, leaking so prob worn centre. So we will do the sleeved casing and single pce cross pin. While we are in there , considering defender 1.41 gears I/o disco 1.222.
I'm over tyred and want to be able to hold locked 4 & 3rd longer....and get there sooner.

While we are down there , TConverter is also on my hit list.
Either an override (manual lockup) button or a low stall TC upgrade. Manual lockup really appeals, I'd like the ability to chug up a big hill in 2nd locked and i think pulling away from a stop on a long incline would be better shifting manually in conjunction with manual TC lockup. Decisions decisions !

Finally, hybrid turbo core and maybe a reflash, my tune is a bit peaky and I think more outright power rather than towing suitable.

Otherwise the old girl is pretty good at this point so I'd be reluctant to move onto something else that I don't know and have to "start again" with.

Thoughts on the first 2 issues welcome

What size tyres do you run and are you still on the stock 3.54 diff ratios?
Unless you do hard off-road, is also consider the ATB centre diff, very strong and an excellent option.
For towing, I'd go a low stall torque converter and a VNT, with a suitable tune to match.

I can vouch for the Hybrid Turbo Cha from experience and a few others
Improved low down power and mid range and top end also better economy
And the cost for the Wow factor is a big bonus compared to a Vnt or other mobs that offer other breed`s and style`s of Turbo`s at a higher end expence
Im waiting on a remap with the hybrid and im guessing i`ll be even more impressed
So if your after excellent performance cost effective gains id be looking at this set up all for under $800.00

You can still go at it hard off-road because the Ashcroft ATB centre diff can still be manually locked.

    Cheers

I'm aware of that, my comment was in relation to the HD cross pin, which is usually more use in hardcore off-roading rigs

Very similar thoughts at the moment. I have 2 changes left I can make to improve to make for better towing, the VGT and the 1.4 defender gearing.

    TD5 inside map
    235/85R16 tyres
    Allisport intercooler
    HD Torque converter
    Boost (currently) tweaked to 1.34bar

The problem is that the VGT is $1500 to $2500, the transfer case is probably a minimum of $500, more likely $1000.

I'm trying to decide on whether to live with the setup now and run it till it explodes and then move on to something else (and that something else is almost certainly not going to be Land Rover...) or spend a few more $$ and see how much longer it will last out.
I hate to think of what I've actually spent at the moment, which is what is playing in the back of my head, but perhaps it's better to do those final commits as at least they should be longevity improvements....
    $13,000 Initial purchase cost
    $01,500 ARB bar
    $00,300 Snorkel
    $01,000 Suspension lift
    $04,500 Autobox & HD converter
    $01,000 Intercooler
$02,000 random stuff (electrics, rear cargo, mods etc)

So I guess, that's ~$23K into it at the moment, though it only as 205k on the clock, so pretty young still. My preferred alternative would be the Toyota cruiser with the 4.5L V8 Twin Turbo, either the wagon or double cab ute, which will be at least $70k.... Which makes me more twitchy....

It is a solid cross shaft instead of the 2 single crappy rover cross pins

Hey Steve, you know it's only the 200 series that's twin turbo, the Utes are all single...
