I've done exactly this, 1.4 ratio from Defender. My engine revs are 2500rpm exactly at 100km/h. 2750 at 110km/h. I've got a TD5 auto with a V8 TC from Ashcroft. It is a great combo but i want to change my diff ratios instead (for low range reduction) so I'll be going back to 1.2 ratio TC. It was recently rebuilt with new bearings and HD cross pin. If you want it PM me I'll need to remove it from my car.

it has had to change to a rebuild of my TC with new gears. I think being the 2004 there are some more electronics on the case.

I was recomended a 1.4 ratio, which is basically the defender one.

My take of the ashcroft calculator is this (please let me know if I have done it wrong) TD5 auto. with 265/75R16

I think this appears to be ok at 110.

The one below is my take of the stock setup. So it is pretty close.

I should have a remap in next week when I get my car back. So it could be a race car

I'd redo the diffs as jazzman said, good excuse for fun in the diffs and it changes both high and low range gearing back to standard

My tires are 265 75 R16. I haven't noticed a negative impact on my cruise control, in fact it works better up and down hills by maintaining the speed more easily.

I have the exact setup you are talking about. 2004 D2a Remaped TD5, with Ashcroft V8 TC and Defender 1.4 gear set in the transfer case. I'm using my original transfer case housing speed sensor.

The 265 75 R16 are 31.6". Writing 32" in the Ashcroft calculator changes it enough to be a little misleading. Mine is definitely exactly 100 km/h at exactly 2500 RPM. I hope that helps.

I can confirm it is a good setup, it is easier and cheaper then changing the diff ratios. However I believe changing the diff ratios to 3.75 (Ashcroft) or 3.8 (KAM) and running 265 75 R16 using a 1.2 ratio transfer case would give you closer to factory gearing. Having said that, if towing all the time you will find fitting the 1.4 ratio TC will bring your revs up and should be easier on you disco. So it is not necessarily a bad call. Just be prepared for a little more noise on the high way. I don't find it an issue at 100 km/h but 110 km/h at 2750 RPM is a little noisy and it just doesn't feel right, needs another gear.

    cheers guys

I think the 1.4 will be ok by the sounds. I reckon the muddies at 110 are going to drown it out

yeh I figure diffs would be better, but this sounded cheaper and easier and it solves the problem of my leaking TC.

And I believe the front track is wider than the rear. Quick and dirty design option to fit v8. So works harder in sand and mud due to not using created front track for rear wheels. I think Marks makes a diff housing etc that fixes this issue.[/QUOTE]

A mate of mine had a cruiser ute had only 120000 on the clock and the rings were stuffed. blowing more oil than a oil rig. over 20 thousand for a new motor so he sold it and brought a new one. It seem the V8's can have this problem. was services by the local Toyota dealership. Lot of money for 120 thou k's. Mostly used to tow is caravan.
