D2 TD5 engine immobilised

Q: Well, what does $1,250 get you?

A: An additional $2,200 more expenditure (approximately). Trying to laugh it off [biggrin][bigsad][biggrin][bigsad][bigsad][biggrin][bigsad][bigsad][bigsad][biggrin][bigsad][bigsad][bigsad][bigsad][biggrin][bigsad][bigsad][bigsad][bigsad][bigsad]etc

Nightcliff Service Centre used their Autologic to confirm the BCU was locked, unreadable and now junk. Installation of an unlocked BCU plus reprogramming has fixed that problem and the vehicle now runs.

But the vehicle is not registerable because of fuel leaks, an ABS sensor issue in one wheel, and a list of other stuff. Have authorised the additional expenditure. Now heading toward the bottom end of the retail price, but at least with some new parts. Vehicle otherwise runs well, but might need aircond re-gas.

I guess that means it wasn't the RF receiver holding you up then since they must have just plugged a new BCU in.

Did you get to keep the BCU? I might be interested in getting hold of it.

steve_a. I probably won't see the vehicle back til end of the week. What are you thinking of doing with such a BCU? I also thought it might be useful to keep the old unit. Could someone with electronic hardware and software skills determine if the controlling software (and lock) is confined to a particular chip, so re-chip and re-code? I guess Sierrafry would have mentioned the possibility.

I confirm that locked BCU can be unlocked with "invasive" methods by someone who knows what he's doing(not me in this case) the EKA can be retrieved from it with the proper tool and some legs of the chip undone from the PCB

Yea, that's kind of me :)
Assumption on what is in there, but I was going to read the EEPROM and have a quick peek - perhaps zero it out if it's just memory and not code, which would default the ECU. Other option was to read my EEPROM and flash the BCU with mine. That would maybe allow unlock of security and then disable it for storage.
Also kind of interested in poking about for poking abouts sake.

I'd say leaks from the usual places - although I'm yet to build up comprehensive knowledge of where these are on the D2, but sounding a lot like a D1.

I washed off the oil resulting from the transfercase intermediate shaft leak, hoping that would be sufficient.

There was also some staining around the steering box, but this could have been the result of fuel leakage if the fuel leak does occur in the same area - gave that a wash too.

The D1 leaks around the 'T' seal in the rear crank bearing journal, does the TD5 have this same issue?

steve_a, if I can get the BCU I will consider sending it to you, unless someone more 'worthy' [smilebigeye](read more highly skilled) comes along and says they definitely can rejig the device. Sierrafrey says it can be done but not by him (I suspect he is deliberately under rating his skills set), so get cracking steve, we're depending on you! [biggrin]Pity to see the control units go to trash. Are there any after market companies making new control units (ECU/BCU etc) for D2's?

I did wonder if for example whether black box nanocom are purely software focused, or they also design/manufacture their hardware, and whether BCU recovery/re-chipping or what ever could be a new avenue.

On the A/C Regas, it can occur that the retaining bolt (M8 20 mm from memory) that secures the electronically activated clutch plate on the front of the A/C compressor decides that being done up isn't as fun as being removed. I luckily found my clutch plate, with shim, sans bolt, gently cradled by radiator bottom hose where it had not destroyed either viscous fan or radiator. No regas required.

I've been watching this story with fear in my bones that it can happen so easily by some stranger borrowing my car and mucking it up. Our old girl is 15 years old, not particularly pretty and as Fiscoveries are famous for having such a clever alarm and immobilisation system whose going to try and nick it? Not your average joy rider or late model car thief. I'm going to feel a lot more secure once I've immobilised the immobiliser , got rid of superlocking and just have a fob that locks and unlocks with a key I can safely use in the doorlock if the bob battery dies. Simple central locking me and that's enough. I hope it's as simple as it sounds. I'm just a bit cautious in case I bugger it up and end up with something like workingonit's problem.
