Yes you can. Either a NNN000120 or NNN500020 will work. The NNNxxxx30 ECU's are for Auto's so avoid.

You will need access to a Nanocom if you plan to DIY.
    Steps are
    - load the correct map for ECU and Vehicle
    - Configure throttle
    - Configure injector codes
    - Sync security code with BCU

The Nanocom can save the throttle and injector codes from your old ECU to file, and which you can then load and apply to the new ECU which saves a bit of mucking about. Otherwise check what they are on your current ECU, make a note on paper, then enter manually on the new ECU.

    Yes plug and play.

Download the Nanocom Map Wizard from this page: Downloads & Support - NANOCOM Diagnostics
This can create a suitable stock map.

There are two tunes - ROW and European, and with variants for each of the ECU types.

Some tuners like to use the ROW maps for Australian customers, but European map is probably the better choice if you are not getting it tuned.

    NNN000120:
    Europe - sthde021-sttdp009
    ROW - sthdr009-sttdp009

    NNN500020:
    Europe - sthde021-sttdp010
    ROW - sthdr009-sttdp010

    Yes.

The ECU is pretty much a blank slate apart from the fact the Auto box ECU's have a CANBUS driver chip, and the Manuals have some additional parts for the clutch switch.

All the sensor configuration is done in the fuel map. Obviously EU2 and EU3 motors use different AAP's but if you load the correct map for the motor you get correct sensor configuration and correct readings.

Unless the sensor has been changed to fix "ghost faults"...

Hi Paul, did you figure out why there are no Eu2 fuel maps for the NNN500250 yet? or what's the problem with this particular ECU?
    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned

Not something I've looked at really.
The NNN5000250 map uses the same variant map as the EU3 maps for the NNN500020.
Unless there are hardware differences related to the unheated EGR it would be fairly likely the NNN500020 EU2 maps will work fine.
