If you look at the two different types of nuts you will see that the one with the raised dimple has the longer internal thread that is needed to pull the spare wheel up against the carrier.
This gels with my observations, I've seen raised dimple nuts, concave dimple nuts and security nuts with concave dimpled caps all on road wheels, as I said before, when looking at dimples trying to decide if its a cap or nut, then the dimples mean squat... just use the wrench to find out THEN use the cap remover if you have to, don't bother trying to remove a real nut with the cap remover cos you just end up with a broken cap remover.

I can't agree that the dimples mean 'squat' as you put it when clearly they have an indicative purpose. My father would wryly say "if all else fails read the instructions" of course meaning read the instructions first to avoid frustration or worse. It'll be mentioned in the Owners Manual i'm sure. however your solution of using the wheel nut wrench is an okay solution cos the lock nut caps will spin on the nuts and a little wiggle will snap off the cap. I too recommend replacing the lock nuts with the standard 'no dimple' nuts especially for offroad driving where wheel changes are more likely and extra complications not needed.

It's too late on a Friday night...

I took our 'new' MY03 DIIA to our local Tyrepower last week, for a wheel rotation/alignment. Well, didn't we all have fun trying to work out how to get the security caps off the 'real' wheel nuts, as well as the spare! I reckon I should have received a $100 consultancy fee, 'cause I had actually read the Owners's Manual the week before...
