    Good vibes??

    Hi All,

Yesterday was the first time I've driven Daphne II (DIIA Td5 Auto) in city traffic, crossing Brisbane a couple of times (Oh Joy!).

So, with lots of stop/start driving and acceleration, I've noticed a bit of harshness/vibration from the engine/transmission in the low 2000s rpm range, particular around 2100-2200.

I've seen some mention of this in the "what to look for in a D2" threads but what does it mean? Just some thing to live with/get over? Or something more sinister?? Thanks.

Yep, around 2150 RPM is, um, not nice.

If the parking brake isn't adjusted properly and there's wear where the shoes sit at rest (the backing plate is worn) it sounds even worse, search for the fix on here. PhillipA did a really nice write up on it.
I was lucky and just did a shoe adjustment and that mostly fixed the rattle.

    Hi Ian!
And slso check out the engine mounts for sagging. The td5 has a particular harmonic vibe at around 2200 and that is worse for the occupants if one or both of the hydraulic mounts has sagged to its rubber bump cushion.

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈

    Thanks Rick,

The park brake is a bit slack - comes up many 'clicks' before engaging, so I'll try that first. Same adjustment nut as the 300Tdi - or should I give myself another upper-cut for being so silly again??

    Hi JC!

So good to hear from you again. I hoped you might chime in to one of my 'newbie' questions about this new-fangled, hi-tech Td5 era stuff (albeit 15-odd years old...)

The PO's receipts list "replaced sagged engine mounts" from a reputable Sydney source in Jul 2014 at ~105,000 km. Could they have gone again by now - ~150,000km?

I've read so much stuff about D2s here now that I can't remember what I've read or not. Is there some concern that these vibes could be to do with a torque converter on the way out? (Bl**dy slushboxes...)

Yes been a bit preoccupied the last 6 to 12months, a lot has happened 😮😐.
If they used non genuine mounts then yes it is very possible that they are knackered already. ...
The park brake rattle is a pain. Would you believe that the td5 defender has the antirattle spring and the disco didn't? ??
There are plenty of vibes with these engines... and plenty to vibrate too. Probably the best engine lr had but its not without its annoyances😑

Keep well, might call you soon for a chat☺

I suspect that's happened with mine as the vibes at idle are far worse than I remember in this car from a few years ago, and other Disco's I've been in. Just an age related thing I'm guessing as the car only had 103,000km on it when I picked it up in April.

what I noticed with my engine mounts, was that as the engine warmed up the vibration/shudder at idle (under load) lessened. So after 30 mins of driving there was minimal vibration at idle when in gear and stationary. I have an auto. When cold and in park it was there but not much of a shudder. Then when you put it in drive with your foot on the brake it would shudder this would disappear once it was warm.

I also had a whole lot of other vibrations around the 2200 mark.

I replaced the mounts and it was a completely different car. I also did the handbrake shoes and adjuster nut. doing those has removed 95% of it. I did the harmonic balancer too. That had a marginal improvement, but perhaps not entirely justified. although as it turned out my seal was leaking, so it would have had to come off anyway, and I did the power steering pump coolant hoses and other drive pulleys at the same time.

I also fitted the turbo core from the group buy and went to bigger tyres. This does seem to have changed/reduced it a bit too.

Thanks for the help so far guys,

Crawled under the car this arvo (not so easy, as Daphne II has factory plastic side steps. And the clearance under these and my not so svelte girth seem to be of much the same dimension...) and found the forward engine mounts. If they are fluid-filled, there was no sign that they had ruptured and leak fluid. Is there a dimension that can be checked to see if they are OK or not?

Doesn't sound like a metallic vibration from the park brake but I'll certainly adjust it and see.

JC, would you recommend fitting the anti-rattle spring from the Defender equivalent? If so, would you have a part no. for one?

    Ta,
if you look up at the bottom of the round part of the mount, you will see a hole in the metal. Beyond that you will see the base of the rubber mount. The rubber should be 15-20mm above the etal base of the mount. As they start to collapse the bolt pushes down and forces that rubber down towards the bottom of the mount and in some cases out the hole.

tutorial on it is here. unfortunately thanks to photobucket, the before and after pics of the mounts have disappeared.

Replacing D2 TD5 engine mounts - how to.
