In the light of day, I found someone has already done this.

Is the carrier held onto the door with nuts & bolts, or are the female threads captive?

Unfortunatley nuts and bolts so if you undo the bolts the nuts will drop down inside.

That may not be the case. Might have just had an "oversized" spare on it and the metal developed "tears" around the studs like mine did. Spare wheel removal?

It's never had anything but the wheels it left the factory with, mounted to it.

Yeah, the bashing and welding is the easy part. Getting it off to effect the repair is going to be a pain.

Drape a wet bag or thick towel behind it and weld it "in situ".
It's only thin metal so it shouldn't need to be welded both sides.

I don't know about that sort of thing Mate, I could be wrong but just disconnecting the battery is what I would do.
This is the first car I have owned that is run by a computer so I don't know the answer to that, Maybe one our learned colleges will pop in with the answer

Only the company that gave us an overhead inlet/side exhaust valve engine could come up with a vehicle that has three different types of wheel nuts.

Just be thankful LR didn't go for LH thread wheel nuts for the passenger side then the vehicle would have five different types of wheel nut (or 6 if you count the one behind the wheel)
