Can anyone explain why compression is poor in 3 and 5, but leak test is normal?

Possibly the head gasket on that bank is blown or a valve problem on those cylinders, Take it to a place where they can gas test the coolant to see if the head gaskets are gone would be my first move because as you said already that you have had overheating problems lately.

It turns out the the leak tester from suoercheapauto must be super cheap. Leak pressure stays in low green, but cranking pressure up to 40psi and I see this.

I’ll be removing the head today

I've managed to get the head off. I noticed that front 2 long bolts were loose, and the gasket around those bolts looks like this.

    File 8-10-17, 17 23 11.jpgFile 8-10-17, 17 24 53.jpg

The gasket was changed by the previous owner less than 5,000km ago. When he tightened down the head he stripped a couple of the threads so he helicoiled them. He said that he did a lot of research on the forums that said the recommended torque (20Nm plus 90 degree angle+ 90 degrees) was too tight, so he tightened them to the D1 torque settings (as recommended on the forums).

Could this have caused the issue?

    Cheers ... Fizz

Ah well the silver lining on this cloud is that you have finally found where the ticking sound has been coming from.
