    Tensioner rattle- crank pulley?

    Hi all,
The belt tensioner on my 99 D2 td5 is making quite the rattle. The rattle is largely there when the engine is cold. Once it comes to temperature the rattle pretty much stops. It has been getting progressively louder/ more noticeable in the past few months.
It stops when the AC is turned off.
There is also a tiny fan belt squeak on shutdown.
I have replaced the AC bearing (was a bit noisy), the belt tensioner 18month ago and the fan bearing also. The other pulleys all feel pretty firm/no wobble or noise.
Looking at the belt tensioner, there is quite a bit of movement in the arm when the engine is cold (ie: it’s taking up tension then relaxing).
Before I splurge on a crank shaft pulley and oil seal etc I thought would enlist the help of those more knowledgeable ? So, anyone else agree/disagree with crank pulley?
    Thanks in advance
(Sorry I have been posting so often recently- have been trying to knock over some maintenance) Tensioner rattle- crank pulley?

    Cheers, Josh

Try a new serpentine belt first , but have a check of the harmonic balancer and other pulleys including a/c .

When you replaced the tensioner was it a quality part OEM, original or aftermarket? If you remove the belt will the tensioner spring freely and have good spring tension?
I'm with discorevy change the belt first.
Squeak could be the HB on the way out again as discorevy had suggested give it a check.

    Tiny squeak on shutdown.

My tiny squeak on shut down, more of a chir-chirp, ended up being a very old belt. I changed the belt and the squeak went.

Belt was changed out when the tensioner was done, but I have a spare. Will throw it on tomorrow.
The tensioner was a OEM from the UK. It has good tension/ springs back.
Jason, are you referring to the bearing in the timing cover? If so, have just sorted that out.
To check to HB, would I undo the 3 bolts on the front and give it a good wiggle to check for movement? As always, appreciate the help.

    Update.
Finally got around to changing the belt. Put an old one on that had been covered in coolant and was squealing. Gave it a clean and the rattle has stopped. Noticed it has a different part number -7pk1809. The new one I bought was 7pk1800. So that would probably account for the tension changes.
But I now have the dreaded crank pulley rattle at shut down! Haha.
    Thanks for suggestions everyone.
