    TD5 'vibration sound' at 2100RPM??

    2 strange sounds:

    A) Strange one, I have tried to record the sound with no real success. I do have a video recording but its 40mb and the forum doesn't seem to like me posting it as an attachment. Happy to email if someone would like to try to hear. It sound 'metal vibration-y' and only at 2100RPM. It's quite specific about when it occurs, can be when driving on flat ground around a carpark (provided its 2100RPM) or uphill. Mostly heard with the window down and probably less than 60km/h, most likely because it's too noisy with wind after that. I can replicate it by going uphill less than 60km/h, windows down. If I sit on 2000RPM there's no sound, and as I rev to 2250RPM it's audible at 2100RPM and disappears at 2250RPM. Doesn't seem to be any vibration through the body while the sound occurs. I changed the brake cover plates thinking that it was percussion (they were cracked anyway) - but seems that I had 2 sounds on top of one another! One sound disappeared, leaving this annoying one in its place. Suspension movement doesn't seem to make a difference. I think by memory you can rev the engine in park without replicating the sound. I was wondering if it was the turbo heat shield, but I tek screwed that. I do notice it quite well from drivers seat, hard to drive and hear from the passenger seat!

New front drive shaft within last 12 months, greased up every 5000km. Don't think its this. ACE functions fine - keeps body level like it should. Although I don't know when the filter was changed last. Thinking of changing the filter soon just in case.

B ) Thinking about sounds, I have noticed another sound (because 1 isn't enough for this post!) that sounds like a solenoid releasing every 20 or 30 seconds while the engine is running. Think it's coming from the ACE block region (drivers door region). Sounds kind of like the SLS release sound only not as long in duration (this one is only a second or 1/2 a second or so). Could a blocked ACE filter do this?

It is most probably the harmonic of the hand brake shoes against the backing plate as they wear badly over time. The fix is new brake shoes and a new backing plate or a welding or brazing the wear points on the backing plate.
LR has a "band aid " fix of stronger springs that hold the brakes against the plate, but I couldn't compress mine enough once I had fixed the backing plate so used the old springs.

I have posted pics of this long ago. Mine have now been quiet for about 40KK.

IMHO what exacerbates it is oil from the intermediate shaft Oring flowing down the handbrake cable and creating a grinding compound inside.
Another cause could be a collapsed engine mount so have a look at yours and if the rubber inside the little hole in the bottom is flush up against it replace them.

    Regards Philip A

Very hard to get rid of it,the TD5 seems to have bad NVH around that 2100rpm.

Lower and higher revs they are usually fine.

Heaps of old threads about this issue,do a search in the D2 section.

New brake shoes and backing plate huh? I haven't gotten around to checking that part since buying this car. Assuming after checking that they're worn, do I need to buy anything else besides brake shoes and backing plate?

    NVH?

    I'll do the search. Thanks.

The noise has really only 'dropped in' last few months

Engine mounts are a likely suspect

    NVH= noise, vibration and harshness.

Adjusting the hand brake shoes may eliminate the noise temporarily too

I chased that sort of noise around for a while. It transpired that it was the flexible part of the exhaust just below the manifold. Got that replaced and viola, noise gone.
