    Torque converters

I have a d1 (I know I'm in a d2 forum) but wondering about your torque converters from my fuzzy memory I recall hearing the d2 had a lock up torque converter wondering if this is correct and if so what the chancEs are of fitting one in a d1 as I'm pretty sure mine is dead and would really like a lock up setup for torque converter

    D1 also has TC lockup

I'm pretty sure the D1 also has a lock up TC. I know my 95 RR Classic does and it's pretty much a D1 underneath. My TC locks at 80km where if my memory is right my old D2 lock up at about 60km.

But it's not that easy just to put a D2 TC in and expect to have the lock up feature. That is controled by the gearbox.

What D1 do you have? V8 or diesel?

    D1's lock up

The lockup apparently is is governed by the amount of trimming of a (thyristor?) spring located in the valve body. I replaced a Tdi300 auto that locked at 78'ish with an Ashcroft that locked at 82'ish, which I found annoying in 80kmph zones. Dave sent me a photo of where the spring is located and some brief comment that you trim it to suit. Never bothered...gave the vehicle and issues to the daughter to live with

So apparently, in the D1, it can lock under or over 80kmph dependent on spring length (pressure).

See here for discussion of TC fit. Discussions around the 2.8 and Tdi are interesting. Ashcroft Transmissions

I have a D2 (to keep this thread relevant to its location ) that locks up all over the place, 80, maybe a 100. After warm up it settles a bit, more often in the 80's. With head in the sand, I'm hoping it's behaviour is down to just the need for a filter change.

Can also confirm that the D1 has a lockup TC.
Mine locks up bang on 78-ish every time(in 4th).
Your gearing (ie. usually tyre size changes) will determine the speed it locks at.
Mine is at this 78-80 zone at 1750RPM.

Yeah, my brothers TD5 does the same.
Sometimes at 80, sometimes just below, sometimes(when cold) not until 100 or so ..
They use an electronic lockup system don't they?

Yeah, read that this can happen.
tried in vain to get brothers TD5 to do it tho.
What conditions does it need to lock up in 3rd?(ie. speed/load/time/etc).

A few weeks ago when I was trying to assess a misfiring/misfuelling TD5, using the Hume hwy between Somerton and Craigieburn(old hume hwy, not the freeway) .. I never felt it lockup into third at any point even at up to 80k/h.

I've never been able to get my D2 to look up in third also. Only tried a couple of times out of curiosity though.

4hp22e lock up in 3rd can be induced by using sport mode and held in 3rd at 80+kmh.

I've never tried sport mode Justin!

Mine will lock up in third around 70km/h with stock tyres and an ever so slight lift, it then locks up nicely.

It's really handy when driving steep hills.
