Ditto. Mine will even lock up when the it reaches that speed going up hill and is a useful engine brake down hill. In lock up third it does 80km/h at 2500rpm while lock up in fourth is 110km/h at 2500rpm. Put the shifter into 3rd accelerate and it should lock up in the 70's, if not there is something not right.

Yep , I've never had to engage sport mode to induce lock up in 3rd in any d2 , it is less of a rev drop than 4th lockup though , to test just drive around 75 ( on speedo )drop back to 3rd and within 4-5 seconds it'll lock up.
If you don't notice the rev drop, then accelerate , if the revs climb with road speed your in lockup , if they fluctuate higher and lower with gently accelerating / de-accelerating your not ( obviously you need to have driven the vehicle for a few minutes before trying this as the fluid must be warm enough before the TCU will signal the lockup

    D1's don't lock up in 3rd.

It will lock when warm at 70KMH in third and unlock when speed drops to 50KMH.
Lock takes about 2 seconds once 70 is reached and is facilitated by easing off just above 70.
I drive like this most of the time in suburban areas.
There are some other conditions that it will lock such as heavy acceleration at 60-70 but I can never reliably gauge exactly what the conditions are.
4Th locks at just about exactly 80KMH and unlocks at 70 KMH.
I now usually accelerate by running third, third lock to over 80KMH , then change to 4th at 80plus which then locks again within 1-2 seconds if you ease off a bit.

I reckon this is the easiest on the transmission as it ensures that the transmission is running as cool as possible. Also the EGT runs at about 290c before the turbo at 70KMh locked.

For those testing their D2 lock up, remember it will only lock up once warm. My D2a will not lock up until the coolant temp is 80 degrees. I'm not sure about older D2's as some have a temp sensor in the trans cooler.

Why are you interested in the lock up? D2's also lock up in low range which makes 4WDing easier. Not sure the D1 does this.

The short answer I think is, you won't be able to fit a D2 torque converter to your D1 and have it lock up like a D2 does. The D2 is a full electronically controlled transmission which enables it to choose when to lock up.

Potentially you could fit the whole D2 transmission to your D1, but i'm not sure if the computer in the transmission needs to talk to the engine ECU. The mounts may not be the same either.

    Yeah, D1 does this too.
I use it on easy gravel trails instead of sticking with high range(where practical).
Eg. trail seems like it's a 40k/h looking drive, so drop it back to low range.

4th - Low at about 30-40k/h will lockup the TC.

Sport mode just makes it an obvious shift feel. Yes if you hold in 3rd for a bit at 70 to 80 in normal mode it will see tc lock.
