I have a ZCG one on the Bull Bar and a cheap ebay booster plugged in to the radio![]()
I’m fed up with the patchy reception from the D2 factory window antenna and are looking to install an external AM/FM antenna and was wondering what others have done and if any forum member has managed to install a regular telescopic one. I’m not that keen on a bullbar mounted whip but ultimately might have to go that way...

I think I have a ZCG on the front bar as well...didn’t know booster were available.
My wife would prefer no antennas on the front bar...
I think it would be tricky installing a telescopic one into your guard although I have no idea what the inside of a D2 guard looks like.
Can't help with experience, as the AM/FM aerial on my D1 works fine.
But I fitted a DAB+ capable head unit and had some trouble with the DAB side of the radio.
Antenna that came with it wasn't working so good, and later I found that the coax cable got jammed between a metal mount under the dash, and had stripped itself to pieces as well.
So I end up getting a Mobile One DAB capable antenna with an appropriate SMA connection for the head unit.
Bull bar mounted, and works well.
Note that Mobile One was recently sold to a company called Rojone(antenna specialist as well), so any search for Mobile One will direct you to Rojone now.
For your purposes tho, you say you don't want a bullbar mount, but what about a bullbar mount antenna type, but mounted on the read door instead. I'd say a 1m antenna should do the trick for reception.
For mounting you'd be best off mounting the base to an L bracket behind the spare, and onto the spare holder.
GME have a nice looking AM/FM antenna. AEM3.
Once tried to use a glass mount AM/FM antenna with very little joy(to a SAAB )
Won't go down that path ever again after that experience.

I have a Mobile One AM/FM whip (looks like a CB antenna) on a "Z" mount on the guard (matches the ham radio one on the other side). Made a huge difference, no booster fitted.

Thanks all for your input - the whip on a “Z” bracket seems like the way I’ll go....
An interesting suggestion came from my sons Commodore Street Car enthusiast mates and what they do to improve radio reception is buy the biggest ugliest antenna they can find and conceal it inside the sill trim moulding![]()
