Gurgling sound from under the Dash - Disco II

    Hi Guys

Experiencing a "gurgling" sound, a bit like a "babbling brook" coming from under the dash board.

Just wondering what this might be and the cause and how to rectify.

    Thanks - GV

It sounds like you have air in your cooling system.
You will have raise your expansion tank and bleed the air out.

Question is why do you have air in the system. If it keeps returning, you may have to consider leaking exhaust fumes (ie head gasket issue) as a possibility.

I had that in my 01 D2 just before the carpet started getting wet.

Ended up being the little one way valves on the evaporator drains where blocked with wet dust.

I just crawled under the car pulled them off and gave them a clean.

Be careful if they are blocked you'll get bit of water down your arm, and if you lucky like me, into your mouth.

As said, could be a blocked air-con drain. Or maybe a problem with the heater.

Hi Guy's - Thanks for the helpful hints and tips - still getting use to how this site works and posting - not sure if the two are related, but I also have water leaking into the left front footwell after it rains - I'm thinking a drain hole is blocked somewhere in the plenum chamber or elsewhere close by - Windscreen has been replaced, and new motor / fan for the cooling / aircon also replaced, there was a stash if leaf matter blown out from under the dash when this was replaced, which leads me to thinking there is a blocked drain somewhere - The specialist Land Rover mechanic is unable to locate the source of the leak, and it's very frustrating too say the least - car is a D2 V8 Petrol and in good nick - any help is appreciated - Many Thanks - GV

Sounds like your heater has failed and is leaking coolant. It happened in our D1. We just blocked the flow to the heater.

You’ll find a ‘ducks bum’ under the car right above the double cardan joint (double uni’). Give it a squeeze and the water will come out. WARNING do it when the engine is cold. The water can be bloody hot!

This sounds like air in the cooling system. Top up the coolant, keep an eye on the coolant level. I have found that the system self bleeds itself quite well. The kicker is, if you are losing coolant, where is it going? If you are lucky, it is an external leak in a hose, radiator etc.
