    This is ridiculous!

Just crawled under Lady Daphne II's skirts on this fine hot and muggy Qld morning, to drain the oil for the first time in our ownership.

17mm socket on ratchet handle: Hmmm, that's a bit tight.

18" breaker bar and socket: Gees, that's bloody tight!

2 foot of pipe over breaker bar handle: Bloody hell!!!

Thinking I'm about to round off the plug, I decide to try the rattle gun. It's only a Supercheap jobbie but's worked well on other pretty damn tight bolts. So, compressor tank fully charged, we begin rattling (and yes, in the right direction) until the compressor cuts back in. Result: NIL, nothing, not a sausage!

What now, esteemed gurus? Hammer and cold chisel? Not too keen on that with an alloy sump. Any other ideas, ladies & gentlemen?

And some of these ham-fisted gorillas-on-steroids have the cheek to call themselves mechanics... (Yes, the service history shows all services have been by 'professional' workshops.)

Some light heating of the bolt?

Could cook off any thread lock or sealant used (p.s. is there any indication they have used any?)

Mine had a socket spot welded to the plug when I bought it. Have since replaced, but assume it was the same. Might get you out of a jam with too much damage.
Super cheap often have $1 sockets in a box, will save ruining a good one.
    .............
    Cheers, Josh

I did consider that but don't think I could get enough heat into with 7-odd litres of oil sitting on top of it.

Give the plug a few Taps with a hammer and persevere with the rattle gun, just keep tapping and rattling and it should eventually come off

Will give it a go later on when it's cooled down a bit. It's 34 C and mega-humid outside at the moment.

Have decided to 'hibernate' in the air-con for a few hours...

Most shops now vac the oil out via the dipstick or dedicated fitting, the plug could have been over tight for aeons. Maybe someone fitted it with some Loctite to stop it leaking, used a high strength one by mistake.

Example of a small vac device:

I have done with stubborn steering arms, leave a small camping cooker setup and wait 10 - 30 mins itll heat the oil eventually. But only in really bad cases as it is risky.

One time we heard an almighty bang and thought I had blown up a friends defender, no just the pitman arm was really really stuck.
