I have a defender so may ????????'sit up higher and be more protected by the chassis etc.
Not sure about that as i have never been under a Disco.
The valve though only sits down about 2cm at the most and im not into rock crawling so cant see how i would ever damage it.

On Graysonline there is a universal sump plug repair kit for sale - might be worthwhile getting.

450mm 1/2” breaker bar, 17mm socket, Freeze and release, engine at operating temperature and it came good!
Replace the hi-tensile anodised sump plug with new sump plug from British off road.
    Oh the tricks we learn....
