How old is the battery?
Hi all,
I'm trying to work out what is causing a starting issue with my TD5 manual. The battery has 900 CCA and the inbuilt hydrometer is showing a green light. When I go to start the car first thing in the morning I get all the lights and the glow plugs go through their cycle. When I turn the key to start the starter solenoid clicks but nothing happens. If I promptly turn off and go to restart it either does one of the following,
- a very lethargic attempt to start then starts straight away like nothing is wrong.
- starts straight away
This can happen after a short run to the shops but seems to clear itself after I've driver for a while.
I've checked the connection to the started solenoid as this has been an issue before. Could I have an earth issue as I have read about on other threads?
Any suggestions would be great.
Thanks!

You have to repair the solenoid with the dedicated kit, see this thread https://www.aulro.com/afvb/discovery...ml#post1523629 ... provided the battery clamps are well tightened

Okay I'm going to brace myself for the responses here. The battery was installed in August 2004, however has worked like a trooper until now. That said, I just double checked the voltage across the terminals and it's sitting at 12.2 volts so perhaps I've gotten my money's worth out of this one...
wow 2004,,,
should go and post this in the D3/4 forum![]()

because it's quick and easy to check and costs nothing: check the condition of the positive terminal connector at the two leads.
The cable ends corroded and become crappy, and it's obvious as to their state. 2 V8's and 1 TD5 experience here and all three look subpar. Considering their age tho, not surprising.
The other thing to check is the earth strap, at the body mid connector end.
On my V8 project car, this was also corroded at the exposed body flange area and crappy looking.
But the spares V8 car I got had a very new looking earth strap there, so I replaced the crappy one with the newer looking one.
Even with the old battery, spraying the positive leads and redoing the earth strap, made the V8 crank a lot faster. New battery fitted later makes it spark in an instant.
(the plan is to replace the positive terminal before the cars gets to roadworthy status too).
I suppose with a 13yo battery, a logical step would be to get the battery tested under load conditions too.
