I dropped in to intensive care today to visit my poorl y D2.
Turned out that they have never seen a more wornout TC. The shaft from the auto box has a groove worn in it and has to be replaced. the planetry gears in the centre diff have NO shims left at all and the housing was worn and had to be replaced with a good second hand one.
The dollar quote for TC rebuild was $1400.00.
My harmonic balancer was stuffed too. I had a new one sitting at home sourced some time ago from Rover Lord, So that was fitted. As was a new tierod end and a new front down pipe.
The total cost is about $3250.00.
$140 per hour labour makes me think I spent my working life in the wrong game.
I hope all this will give a vibration free ride.
I have just about run out of things to replace on this truck and I am too far in the hole to get rid of it.
    Regards, Nick (Worane).
PS. No amount of oil additive was going to fix that little lot!

Ok, I just got home $3247.58 poorer but the truck feels good. Unfortunatly, even though they did all I asked them it still has the vibration. They, (LR), think it may be the torque converter.!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do any of you have any other thoughts? T case it like new both prop shafts replaced new harmonic balancer, and a smooth running TD5.
It does have a little noise in the rh rear hub.
I can't think of any other thing to throw money at but the torque converter.
    Comments please.
    Regards, Nick.

    Hi Nick,
    Could you describe the vibration?
Without knowing what it feels like it could be the rear Flexable Coupling or a tyre or wheel balance issue.

Hi, It is like running on small corrugations. It is there most speeds but gets worse on a small hills with light throttle on. The funny thing is, if I back off the loud pedal and reapply it, the vibrations go away.
The car has new prop shafts and a new doughnut .

Is it directly linked to road speed or engine revs and is it there when locked up as well as unlocked?

I tried to find an answer to the last question from Pippin, about when it came and went.
It seemed to be vibration free up until it locked up when warm and locked it seemed to be there all the time.

    Hi Nick,
It appears that LR may be correct that it is the torque converter. Does anyone else have an opinion on that?

Wow, $3250, you could have bought a complete ashcroft unit for less than that with atb fitted, but yes labour is expensive.
