(V8) Starter blowing fusible link 13

Changed starter motor out for a spare second-hand item I had in the shed, came from a vehicle in which it functioned without fault.

It is blowing fusible link 13 every time key is turned to start position.

Seems to me there is a short within the starter motor which draws current through the solenoid feed wire and fusible link 13.

With both wires removed, would a test for continuity between the solenoid feed terminal and the starter motor feed terminal be conclusive?

    Thoughts anyone?

    Starter relay operation from RAVE:

When the ignition switch is moved to the crank position III, a feed passes from fuse 23 to the
coil of the starter relay in the engine compartment fusebox on a WR wire - tested ok, relay is receiving feed with key in start position.

The coil is earthed to the BCU on a BO wire. When the BCU determines that starter
operation is allowed, the earth path is completed and the starter relay energises, closing the
relay contacts - relay tested ok and swapped, and feed is going to solenoid as below.

The feed from fusible link 12 (error in RAVE I think, should be FL 13) passes through the starter relay contacts and is connected from
the engine compartment fusebox to the coil of the starter motor solenoid on an NR wire. - test light between solenoid feed wire and earth shows wire is live at key position III. However, if feed wire is connected to solenoid, fusible link 13 blows at key position III.

The coil energises, closing the starter motor solenoid contacts. The coil is earthed via the starter
    motor body.

Strange as the diagrams too are showing FL12 to be for the starter and FL13 for lighting switch but mistakes in RAVE are not uncommon, just confirm, if you remove FL13 it does not crank? if it doesnt unplug the lucar connector from the solenoid and turn then ignition to III ...if it doesnt blow the problem is deffinitely with the solenoid but if it blows this way too follow the wire between the fusebox and solenoid to not have a short to ground

(V8) Starter blowing fusible link 13

Was hoping to hear from you, Sierra.

    The diagram above shows FL13.

No, does not blow if lucar not connected to solenoid.

Just occured to me..... with lucar removed and battery feed on starter motor, a test for voltage between solenoid terminal and earth should tell me if starter is shorting to solenoid, right?

As long as it doesnt blow with solenoid unplugged you dont need more tests, the problem is there in the solenoid for sure, maybe the contact is having a short to earth, if you insist measure resistance across the solenoid's contact(not terminal) and earth... yes the facelift diagram shows FL13 the early one FL12

Can confirm starter was faulty. Thanks Sierra.
