    Td5 making oil.

Seems that my D2 has decided to "make oil" in the last 1,000k's or so. Last time I checked (about 1,000 km's ago) the oil it was at the bottom of the full notch on the dipstick. Today it's a little over the notch so it's risen by about 5mm. Both times dipped in the same place with the engine being stone motherless cold. Can't smell diesel on the dipstick or at the filler but then my sense of smell is pretty awful.

I will monitor the situation with great interest hoping for the best but fearing the worst...

So, ladies and gentlemen who can guess right ? Head or seals ?

It's done 392k km's without ever having the head off so I reckon that's a good run.
    Cheers,

If the head has never been off it will have plastic dowels, so it maybe worth doing the head gasket and the seals at the same time for peace of mind.

    That's what I'm HOPING for.

I had the weekend after next slated for an injector loom replacement and EGR delete exercise. Might have to bring that forward a bit...

This current palaver confirms my belief that a Land Rover will always find a place to leak one of its fluids and that if you fix a leak another will start somewhere else. For a few months now I have had nothing leaking from anywhere and now fuel is leaking from somewhere into the sump.

Should never have got the front hub seal done - should've been able to tolerate a very small weep and left it at that...

Get a business card, a drop of oil on the plain side and let it spread.

If it has a distinct, lighter ring or halo it's probably fuel....

It's fuel alright. Both the blot test and my sense of smell when the engine is warm show it.

    Here's hoping it's not a head crack...

If it's not a head crack I'm very much inclined to leave the head as it is. This D2 has been an absolute paragon of reliability so I'm loathe to disturb anything unless I really need to.

I'm in touch with the previous owner and he assures me that it's never been overheated even though he killed the gearbox with a LOT of horse float towing. He also kept an unbelievably detailed service record.

He only sold it because he was facing a new gearbox and thought he'd unload it and get himself an Isuzu MUX.
