    Noise behind the dash,

In the dash there is a small grill type area right behind where the ignition key goes in, the noise sounds like when you used to put a piece of cardboard in the spokes of your push bike when you was a kid.
IT starts up when you turn on the ignition, if you turn it of and on again the noise sometimes goes away. What is it? I hope nothing terminal.
And how difficult is it to do a manual gearbox conversion in place of the automatic.

    Thanks

    Russell.

No worries, it's the cabin temperature sensor's small fan full of dust, opn the lid under the steering wheel, unplug it, remove it(it has 2 bolts, one needs some gymnastic), blow it and eventually lube it at the ends, more details here In-Car / Cabin Temp sensor Fan - Land Rover Forums - Land Rover Enthusiast Forum with the difference that your's is on the right side

    Discovery Td5 (2000), manual, tuned
