    Long Salty Trip

Without instigating the usual.. My grand dad's next door neighbour swears by camel dung... conversation... I'm interested in real world experience here.

We might be spending 6-8 weeks on an island in the Disco 2.

Our biggest concern is rust in the beloved D2!

It has done many beach trips... but gets a huge washing and cleaning as soon as we return.

It has a few small rusty bits but nothing to worry about.

But with over a month away.... there wont be opportunity for the after beach wash like we do for Straddie Camping trips.

It's a valuable vehicle. Its had a long and well cared for life and we want many more years hence!

So contained in the below list are the usual suspects in the rust prevention.

Fish Oil/fisholene - Old school but gets good reviews and feedback. Stinks and needs regular application.
Lanolin/Lanotec. As above and appears on an even keel with Fishoil.
Transmission fluid and Dust! I'm skeptical.
Tectyl - commercial product that seems to have pretty good reputation. Hard to use and messy though.
Waxoyl - Very popular with English Land Rover restorers.

Right now I'm leaning towards lanolin or Tectyl.

Tectyl is the go,paint on where you can,yes messy but no pain no gain

Park on nature strip, use disposal overalls...

Then use Tectyl spray can for the hard to get to places.

While away park in freshwater creek and give her a good wash every so often, use 12 volt shower pump to help.

    Have a good trip

I have been using "Lanotec" for years on aluminium boats and boat trailers and I find it to be fantastic stuff, I just spray it on and it is also good for battery terminals as well.
The only downside is that all the dust sticks to it.

Have used lemon scented, pressure-pack lanolin on vehicle underbodies for protection against salted winter roads.

Messy to apply. Easy to see and maintain coverage though.

Sand will stick to it but degreaser should sort that out post-trip.

Might be problematic when applying to keep it off certain areas though (shock pistons, brakes etc) ?

I have always thought it was a scam and didn't do anything other than reduce the bank a/c of the purchaser.
