AFAIK up to 2000 all the D2s had the CDL mechanism in the TB but the linkage was optional, from 2001 on there were some with factory fitted complete CDL and those without it had no internals in the TB either.

My limited experience on Qld beaches is tyre pressure is king, keep the revs up, lock the cdl, 2nd low is probably the gear, in real soft sand. Be aware the engine temps rise quickly in low range soft sand driving. Your engine cooling system has to be spot on.
Yeah alas mine doesn't. 2001. Definitely no selector on tc. Got it cheap though with the thought long term to put one in...
I took my D2 for 500Km of sand driving on Fraser Island. LT265/70R16 tyres. I found that 18psi was ideal after trying 16 and 20 psi. Used Low range auto on the sand tracks, high range auto on the beaches. Never even looked like getting stuck, but did get to pull a couple of other 4WDs out, including a D4!
Key is to keep your momentum and don't turn too sharply.
Hope that helps.
Mine is August '02 make and didn't have any of the CDL parts.
I did Simpson desert with no CDL and a stock car except for 245/75R16 tyres then Hay River a couple of years later with retro-fitted CDL.
Didn't have any issues in very soft sand in the first trip in the company of CDL equipped D2a's and Defenders. Tyre pressure 20psi and the TC worked beautifully when needed. With the CDL all I noticed was less TC light coming on. As others have noted it's all about tyre pressure first then momentum as needed... and we routinely snatched a then new D3 out of holes as the driver wouldn't follow the tyre pressure advice!
Yes they dropped the internals out around 01/02
Then the full diff lock with lever, re appeared in the D2a,which was MY 03(or maybe MY04) onwards, with the facelift front and rear lights, and a few other changes.
My '99 had internals,the '02 had nothing,the '04 had it all.
Yes the D2 did very well in sand without CDL but CDL made it better especially when moving off from stationary in powdery dry sand and more so again when towing and having to stop half way up a cutting because a goose has come down whilst seeing you towing UP the rise...
Cheers
