If you can afford it Castrol Transmax Z is the ATF all others would be judged by.

In an R380 Castrol Syntrans 75w-85 is good, but if $ are no object Motul Gear 300 (non LSD) is bloody amazing.
Don't be put off by it being a 75w-90, at 0° it's thinner than Syntrans.

At the risk of getting off topic, re Castrol Transmax Z, is it just better "lubrication" or for example does it make the transmission last longer?

Just to clarify, I was given that info from someone in the industry who I respect.... but, I personally use the same as yourself ( either atf fs or fuchs 4400 ) interestingly, penrite state forward compatibility with dexron 6.

my thinking is that while the lower vi of the dx6 might work very well on a box in tip top shape , I would have thought there would be more chance of drag, particularly on the td5 when the "F" clutch basket can wear faster than others due to the firing pulses

For a very long time it had better oxidation resistance than what was commonly available, handled higher temps better and met GL4 gear oil performance even though Castrol didn't advertise that so basically the trans lasted longer.
There are now some very good synthetic ATF's on the market.

Just reporting back re my perplexing noise!
Adjusted the park brake as described - took a number of turns to get the shoes to bind up and backed them off 1.5 turns. Have 3 clicks on the lever. Hey presto, the noise is 99% gone so new shoes to be put in.

Would like to support an AULRO aligned vendor so anyone out there want to sell me a pair - just PM me with details.

Re the engine, she is currently running Penrite HPR Diesel 15 Semi Syn 15W-50, Extra Ten Full Zinc even.
Is this OK or should I change over to the 10W 40 recommended previously? Oil change due now so if a change is recommended I'll do it this time.
The oil filter on the Td5 is a little gem to get to isn't it

It's the backplate that may need attention if there is wear where the shoes contact it. Also the adjuster may be slowly undoing itself which could be the reason for your adjustment rather than shoe wear. You can also get updated hold down springs for the shoes which also helps, I think they are Red rather than standard black.

The original factory fill grade was a full synthetic 0W-30 so I can't see any reason to go heavier than an xW-40, it's just not necessary and just creates extra drag costing power and fuel.
It could be argued we're all nuts using an xW-40, millions of albeit petrol cars in the US have been using xW-30 oils forever and last almost as long, too.
FWIW big diesels are being specced with xW-30 HD oils now too.
