I mustn't play hard enough, I only used the winch on the Defender for pulling stock out of dams, straightening fences, straightening bull bars on Patrols and retrieving Prado's.![]()
Used a tirfor once, to extract a tojo that had aquaplaned half way across a swamp south of Darwin, after hitting the swamp at speed, the driver full of Darwin good will. The recovery went like this; Recovery vehicle with winch extends winch to maximum, local yokal adds about 70 metres of anchor rope from his boat to the recovery, to reach said stuck vehicle, tirfor is fitted between winch hook and rope, and gullible person [ me] stands at tirfor, waist deep in the swamp, a long , long way from solid land. Now, I had no idea why the tirfor was needed at that point, still don't. We got him out, I hate swamps, and tirfors. In that order.
I’m pretty sure the dinosaurs died out when they stopped gathering food and started having meetings to discuss gathering food
A bookshop is one of the only pieces of evidence we have that people are still thinking
I have had a Doni8tor 1200lb winch fitted to .y D2a now for a couple of years and it has been used in anger, dunked in seawater, mud and generally abused.
I took it off to service it just before this trip and although the grease was still in perfect condition I cleaned it and regreased it anyway.
These winches are cheap But they are Not "nasty", I have No idea how good the warranty service is because I have Never had a problem with the winch.

Don't forget to consider what you are mounting the winch to. I have the ARB Sahara bar on my D2a and it is only rated for a 9,000 or 9,5000lb winch. I believe that the crush cans that mount it to the chassis would be the weak point that limits this.
Awesome post. A pity that it's now 5 years old and a lot has changed within the winch market in that time - prices have come right down, new brands have entered and old brands have new models. It's a great awareness of what to look for in the manufacturers warranty and those brands listed in the to buy heading are definitely worth being the start point.
EDIT: just noticed at the bottom of the post that it was last updated on 8 June 2018. Even better!
There first recommendation of the T-Max X-Power Series would be good for the D2 in the 9,500lb flavour - T-Max X-Power Series IP67 Waterproof/Dustproof 9500lb 12v Electric Winch Spooled with Synthetic Rope - T-MAX - price isn't too bad either, especially considering the warranty!!!
