    TD5 Camshaft questions

    Hi all,

I am in the middle of a head gasket change. Got to be honest I am a little concerned at this point that it will go back together and work!

I have been following psimpson's thread and various other sites and the haynes manual.

I have reached the point of reinstalling camshaft but a couple of questions.

The camshaft does not sit flush at both ends. I think that I need to install it with the timing cut out facing up and then bolt down carefully putting pressure on the springs. Is this correct? I had the engine set at tdc with the cut out held firm with a drill bit if that makes sense.

Also I lost the order of the cam follower (cam rollers) due to the box getting knocked over. Is this an issue? How can I rectify this?

I have tried to find answers already tothis but haven't found anything so far.

    Cheers

fit the camshaft as you've stated , just use the tightening sequence gradually until the cam carrier is sitting flush ( do not use silicone to seal to the head ), then torque up , also using the sequence.
not ideal about mixing up the cam followers but line them up on an even surface and if there are any that are noticeably lower than the majority , chuck them and replace with new.
don't stress too much , take your time , make sure everything is spotless and lightly oil the cam before reassembly.

What sealant have you for between the head and the cam carrier, you need the right stuff and be fussy how you apply it.

Thanks discorevy and whitey. Will check out the followers tomorrow. I have a permatex anaerobic gasket maker. Believe this is the right stuff? Will use sparingly. And yep, lined everything up before dismantling...

On another note, a (non-LR) mechanic friend is concerned about the timing. He's just had a kid so can't really help right now. Should I be concerned about the timing? Haven't read anything about it thus far...

With the timing, if you have the timing pins in the flywheel and cam and the marks look correct on the chain to cam sprocket you should be right, just follow the procedure with the tensioner which ever sort you have.
The sealant looks correct the stuff I used had the consistency of Loctite and red, you will see the oil galleries in the head that’s where you don’t want squeeze out.
Tightening the head bolts I bought a breaker bar from Trade tools which is about 750mm long it was under $30, I bought it after seeing how I struggled cracking the head bolts with the standard length cracker bar and pipe on disassembly, much easier.

Good luck with it, it does your head in I know it did with mine.

I use a 1 inch foam paint roller for the sealant, it gives a perfect light coat. Just squeeze some on a board and use the roller as you would paint.

Thanks for the tips guys, both worked a treat. Damn I did not enjoy tightening the head bolts that tight. Was just waiting for a ping! Judgement day tomorrow I reckon....
