    Third Year of Ownership.

    Another year, another 22,000 kms

    Maintenance and workshop.
    December 2017
Provent installed and the intercooler given its final flush. The intercooler will need a flush in 360,00 kms, in about 18 years’ time. Removing the radiator fan cowl revealed the radiator leak.
EGR delete. This included the vacuum actuators and vacuum pipes. EGR cooler still in situ, this will be removed over the summer when the radiator is replaced.
    January 2018
The car got shirt fronted, damaging the bull bar and the crash cans.
    April 2018
Replaced the air, fuel and oil filters, full flow and rotary.
    May 2018
Attempted a rebuild of the front prop shaft.
Bought and installed a new fully greasable prop shaft
    September 2018
Tightened up a bolt on the FPR, stopped the leak.
Replaced the rear disc rotors and pads.
Replaced the green fuel line form the pump to the FPR
    October 2018
    Installed a winch.
Car got rear ended, I might fit a steel rear bar.

    Fun type stuff.

That’s a reasonable yearly maintenance bill for a wagon of that age, all you have to do now is to get people to stop running into you.

Yep that looks a pretty reasonable maintainance list for a 15 year old car. Nothing too out of the ordinary.... accidents aside.

I do do recommend a steel rear bar, You just have to look at the plastic ones and the crack now

    cheers

I'd recommend to get a click/quick drain system going whilst you're at this.

    https://drainplug.com/product/click-...6-m16x1-5-t10/

Not cheap(now that the Aussie peso has dropped to junk status! )
I got the Femco version(there are other brands too, can't think of them off hand now).

On the 300Tdi, the drain plug is angled backwards, and the first 5.5lt stream of sump oil is directed perfectly towards the front sway bar, so as it splashes on the swaybar, it spatters all over the place.
I had to do something about it.
I was going to get a screw on version, but thought if I'm doing it, I'm going to do it properly, so went with the click drain version.
Like a garden hose. You don't remove a sump plug with this system, you remove the sump plug cap(by hand). Then connect the click drain to the sump plug still on the sump like you'd connect the garden hose.
Have a hose on the end of the click drain and the oil then goes directly into an oil container, rather than into an oil pan ... which you then need to empty into an old oil bottle to dispose of it.

I bought a 10lt drum of oil, and now that it's empty I drain the sump directly into the 10lt drum, and I'm done. I just let it drain for a couple of hours if need be. I then take the 10lt drum to the recycle depot and empty it into their drums(free).
The 10 lt drum only just fits under my D1 without raising the car if need be.
Because there is no chance of getting oil on your skin, you can drain it fully hot, so it also runs thinner too, and zero chance of dropping the sump plug into a bath of hot oil.

I'd say this Femco system is about the best 'accessory' I've yet got for my tdi D1, just for the cleaner/easier oil change method now.
I think it cost me about $100(approx 50-60 EuD).

If you're interested the parts you'd need (having looked into it for brother) are LB8090020426 (sump plug replacement part) and LB851015(quick connect plug)
    Arthur.

All these discos are giving me a heart attack!
