    Battery Box Bolt

Getting a new battery delivered tomorrow for the D2 TD5 so thought I would remove the old one and see what is in the bottom and give it a clean.

Wasn't as bad as I thought it might be, however, the two forward bolts on the bottom (in the deep holes) where a little rusty so I took them out and gave them a bit of clean up. When I took out the one on the right (as you look in, closest to the radiator) there was oil on the thread. There is no oil in the battery box itself and the oil appears to be between the box and the panel that holds the captive nut.

I have looked in, under, around, over, through, every which way and cannot find where this oil may have come from, any ideas?

P.S. If you are in the market for or need a battery, I can clearly state that, after much surfing, ringing, asking and visiting retailers, that (in Qld) the RACQ have almost the cheapest battery for a D2. Calcium, 1000 CCA, 105Ah. Members $260, Non-members $285. Battery World wanted $375, they were the worst. REPCO had one for $232 but had lower CCA. With the exception of specialist battery/auto elecs, very few carry this size battery.

Oil in the battery box might come from the ECU red plug

Thought about that but I only checked that about a month ago and was all good and it is on the other side to this bolt. Thanks, I'll have another check of the plug though before new battery goes in.

If I recall rightly from the days I owned a D2 the hydraulic jack was stored next to the battery. The oil leaks out of the jack over time.

Ah, ok, better check the jack too. Didn't think of that one. Thanks

I'd dare say that oil on the bottom half of that bolt would (or could) be coming from the intercooler area(maybe) .. or EGR inlet pipe/hose connections.
I think the EGR is higher than the level of that bolt area, so more likely not EGR.
But for example, if the IC had a small pinhole, and hadn't been cleaned out either, then it can collect oil residue and possibly push it out in minute doses over a long period.
Otherwise could be a small leak in the IC hose down low .. or something to that effect.

I doubt it'd be the jack, as it has it's own recess where oil would collect before seeping down towards the forward two bolts.

Otherwise about the only other parts I can remember that would lose oil could be oil being thrown by the alternator/vacuum pump.

Obviously check the serpentine belt for oilyness, possible front main seal, or whatever else leaking being flicked across by the belt.

Well it's not the jack or the plug on the ECU. EGR is deleted and no oil on belt or near alternater, so will have a closer look at the IC suggestion. I don't know that is has ever been cleaned. Was thinking of replacing with uprated from D2a at some stage.
    Thanks

I wonder if Noki 3.9 can still do deal on batteries with his new company? I've bought several times from the company he worked for previously and which offered AULRO members a discount. It might be worth asking.
