    Oh joy

Looks like it's time to get the alternator out. Went down the shops today and on the way back the battery light came on. Battery voltage is 12.1V measured at the battery terminals. Idling it's 11.8V and at 2500RPM it's still 11.8V. Turn engine off and it's back to 12.1V or thereabouts. Had a good poke around more out of hope than anything else and everything's still connected OK. Called the local (really good) auto elec and he told me he'd either fix it or replace it depending on what's wrong as long as I take it out. That indicates to me that it's not a fun job... :-)

There are lots of alternator threads, LR part numbers, ebay pages, rebuild threads,
If its the original its a few years old now and probably would need a total rebuild,, and then placed in your spares box...

That's exactly what I had planned since the auto elec told me he'd do it as long as I took it out.

I've been busy this morning - sourced a good, tested alternator for a good price and I've book marked a whole lot of threads as well as having a look at RAVE. I've read that it can be done without removing the fan but I'll beg or borrow the fan tools and while it's out I'll do the tensioner and idler pulleys as well - they're original too.
While I've got no skin on my knuckles I'll get the intercooler out and give it bath as well as anything else that looks like it could be worth doing..
    Cheers,

I upgraded my intercooler and while i was at it i replaced the Radiator as it was 14 years old just because i could .
I found replacing the Alternator a easy job with all the above and fan removed
If it helps i have the spanners you can borrow but im in Narre

If you are going to remove the inter cooler for a clean, think about installing a provent. That could be the last time you flush the inter cooler. Also EGR delete.

Just make sure your bracket for the Provent is well engineered

There is a main earth strap on the battery side down below the V8 alternator,, hidden from prying eyes.....
I relocated the engine end up near the alternator bracket into a ready made 8mm hole in PLAIN SIGHT. now I just tug it every time I check things.
