Starter solenoid contacts are always my first port of call...
Hi All,
Our DIIA has found a new way to keep us entertained lately.
Several times in the last few months I have unlocked, hopped in, turned the key to ON (and all the pretty little dash lights illuminate!), turned to START and... Nothing! (No clicks, dash lights stay bright, headlights are bright, so battery seems fine.) Re-locking and again unlocking and (usually), next try it starts instantly, as normal. Known issue??
Once or twice it has taken two re-lock/unlock cycles to get it to go and once when hitting START there was a loud relay click but no cranking (and dash lights still bright).
Any clues would be appreciated.

Mine has a similar intermittent issue would be able to drive it, then no start, but I think mine is related to the xyz switch as when I move the auto gear stick through from park to 1 and back it then starts go figure that out. The mystery of owning a land rover

If not , then , as mentioned either the starter solenoid or loose wire to starter , earth etc
Many thanks to all. Guess what I'll be doing this drizzly Sunday?
By the way, why does the poor old 'W' always get left off the 'WXYZ' switch? RAVE lists the 4 bit code that the WXYZ switch outputs. Strangely enough, only seven codes are needed for a 4 speed, so a 3-bit switch would suffice (without having to use '000' which would be a bit dodgy). Maybe Mr ZF was already thinking about (or already producing) 5, 6 or more forward gear transmissions?
Anyway, I propose a motion to 'Bring back the 'W' !

I believe (may be wrong) that the 5 gear version of the ZF is actually in a 3 series BMW. I was looking into the logistics of doing an at home Autobox rebuild and vaguely remember a youtube series of a guy tearing down one from a beamer that takes the same clutch pack renewal kit as our box.
Also, +1 on the starter solenoid. The kit is only about 20 bucks and takes an afternoon to do (I did mine on a grassy camping site in St George in Queensland, but that is another story). 1/2 inch ratchet with 6 inch extension (17 mm nut I think) worked for me to get the top nut of the starter from underneath, some others swear it's only possible (or much easier) with a 3/8 ratchet, extension and wobble joint. There is a bit of geometric jiggery pokery to get the starter around the diff, but it does come out.
