    Help! Transmission stuck in Neutral!

Hi all, this just happened and I have no idea what's going on. I have a 2004 D2 TD5 with 180,000kms.

For a long time I've had the 3 amigos and a shuttle valve switch electrical fault code on the SLABS ECU (I have a nanocom). Also the shuttle valve switch itself passed its resistance tests.

This has led me to completing the "option B" mod this morning finishing at around 11am (it didn't work by the way but that's a separate issue). From there I drive about 15mins to a New Years day function, then drove back home at around 3pm.

I've spent the remainder of the afternoon up until now (6:10pm) trying to fault find my option B work by checking the earth and clearing the faults with the nanocom etc...

After a bit of playing around, I got to a point where I was going to take the car for a drive to test the HDC/ABS. I took it for a little drive around the block, failed to get rid of the 3 amigos, went home, tried something else, went to go for another drive (about 10mins after successfully driving around the block)................

I turned the car on, rolled in (what I thought was) reverse down my sloping driveway, tried to put it into drive to proceed on my test drive and found that depressing the accelerator simply revved the engine with no drive being applied to the wheels. This alarmed me and so I tried accelerating in reverse - same result. Then I tried putting it in Park and found that it wouldn't go in at all, and instead made a disgusting grinding noise - exactly like the noise a manual would make when grinding a gear. Grinding vibrations could be felt through the stick as well.

I tried turning it off and on again, and tried reading faults from all parts of the nanocom with only the SVS fault still showing (no faults from the gearbox).

So now my car is stuck on the road out the front of house and can't select drive... or Park for that matter.

If anyone has any idea of what might have happened / how I can prevent any damage (or further damage) or something I should look at, please help! My go-to mechanic has obviously been closed all day due to the public holiday.

Your transfer case has likely dropped into neutral...

Wow.... on one hand, I feel relieved, on the other, I feel like an idiot...

The transfer case had been bumped into neutral...

Recent issues with the car and likely a bit of stress due to unsuccessful Option B led me to assume the worst...instead of going through logical checks.

Anyways, thanks for the solemn humbling...the car is back in the garage, albeit without ABS lol

Don't worry, I have had, over the years, a few actually delivered to my workshop on a tilt tray, in neutral... the look on their face as I fix the problem before it is even unloaded...😅

Hehe...don't feel too bad mate. I'm sure we've all done some pretty silly things over time.

Back in the day when there were lots of "3 on the tree" manual HQ Holdens and sister models getting about the gear linkage mounted on the steering column would wear and the car couldn't be shifted from Ist gear from inside. I've had cars in this situation crawl across Melbourne in first gear at night looking for help from an open service station.

Immediate solution - lift the bonnet and a simple tug on the linkage freed them up quite nicely.Long term a large worm drive clamp around the column against the linkages eliminated the slop which caused the problem.

There was much mirth and good natured teasing if they were a regular customer.

Just one...the same one as before the option B efforts - SVS electrical failure. Intermittent: 23 times....?

Checked my work and I'm happy I did a neat job and also tested the earth and it's all good.

I spose I'll pull it apart again check the SVS seals more closely... They looked fine the first time though and I also put a new SVS in as part of option B (the old one passed ohms testing but thought I'd put the newie in anyways).. might get my brakes bled as well.

After what seems like an eternity of reading up on it, I gather the bottom line is that there are a bunch of reasons it could be occurring and I've just gotta work my way through the list.

I've actually never had functioning ABS/HDC/TCON the whole time I've had the car lol it's going to be satisfying when it works one day.
